Sé Nova de Coimbra

The Sé Nova de Coimbra (New Cathedral) is a magnificent cathedral that was constructed in the 16th century, blending Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. It holds great significance as it replaced the former Sé Velha (Old Cathedral) and became the new religious center of Coimbra. As you approach the cathedral, you’ll be greeted by its impressive facade adorned with intricate details, including beautiful statues and ornate carvings.

Upon entering the cathedral, you’ll be captivated by the grandeur and beauty of the interior. The spacious nave is adorned with elegant decorations, including elaborate altarpieces and exquisite stained glass windows that allow colorful light to filter into the space, creating a mesmerizing atmosphere. The high ceilings and arches add to the sense of awe-inspiring splendor.

One of the highlights of Sé Nova de Coimbra is the impressive organ, a true masterpiece of craftsmanship. This historic instrument has an enchanting sound and is often used for musical performances and concerts held within the cathedral.

The cathedral also houses several chapels, each with its own unique character and artistic treasures. One notable chapel is the Capela do Santíssimo Sacramento, known for its beautiful frescoes and stunning gold leaf decorations.

Aside from its architectural and artistic wonders, Sé Nova de Coimbra is an important religious site, serving as the seat of the Bishop of Coimbra. It has witnessed centuries of religious ceremonies and plays an integral role in the spiritual life of the local community.

As you explore the cathedral, take a moment to appreciate the tranquil and contemplative atmosphere. Whether you’re a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply seeking a place for reflection, Sé Nova de Coimbra offers a unique and enriching experience.

Located in the heart of Coimbra, the cathedral is also surrounded by other attractions. Nearby, you’ll find the historic University of Coimbra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the picturesque Jardim Botânico, a beautiful botanical garden. The surrounding streets are filled with charming shops, cafes, and restaurants, allowing you to further immerse yourself in the local culture and cuisine.

Visit Notes

This was a nice church, not the most impressive I’ve seen, but there are some gorgeous gold-gilt altars to enjoy. It didn’t take long to visit and it’s near all the other attractions, so it’s worth your time to go in. It was a couple of Euros to get in and they have some lights you can turn on using coins, so it’s helpful to have some pocket change with you.
