The Igreja dos Clérigos, or the Clérigos Church, is a magnificent architectural gem located in the heart of Porto, Portugal. It is one of the most iconic and recognizable landmarks in the city, and a must-visit for anyone exploring Porto’s rich cultural heritage.
Built in the 18th century, the Clérigos Church showcases the exquisite Baroque style that was popular during that time. The church was designed by Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, who left his mark on many important buildings in Porto. Its elegant facade stands tall and commands attention, with its elaborate carvings, intricate details, and a magnificent bell tower that dominates the skyline.
Inside the Clérigos Church, you’ll find a peaceful and serene atmosphere. The interior is equally as impressive as the exterior, with intricate woodwork, ornate altars, and beautiful frescoes adorning the walls and ceilings. The grandeur and attention to detail make it a place of reflection and contemplation.
As you explore the surroundings of the church, you’ll discover a vibrant neighborhood filled with charming streets, quaint cafes, and bustling shops. The Clérigos Church is centrally located, making it an excellent starting point for further exploration of Porto’s cultural and historical attractions.
Visit Notes
The church and tower are connected, so if you buy a ticket to climb the tower, you will be able to explore the church as well. The view over the church from the balcony is superb.
Be sure to get yourself a ticket for the Spiritus light show they put on in the evenings. It was pretty cool. Sit at the back of the church for the best view of the show.
