Iglesia de la Purísima

The Iglesia de la Purísima in Salamanca is a remarkable example of 17th-century Baroque architecture. Commissioned in 1636 by Manuel de Zúñiga y Fonseca, Count of Monterrey, the church was intended as a family mausoleum and a convent for his daughter, Inés Francisca de la Visitación. Situated opposite the Palacio de Monterrey, the church is part of the Augustinian convent complex and was declared a National Monument in 1935 .

Architecturally, the church showcases a Latin cross plan with a single nave and side chapels. Its design reflects a strong Italian influence, attributed to architects Bartolomeo Picchiatti and Cosimo Fanzago. The interior is adorned with five Neapolitan marble altarpieces, the most notable being the main altarpiece featuring José de Ribera’s 1635 painting of the Immaculate Conception. This piece served as a model for many artists during Spain’s Golden Age .

Visitors can also admire artworks by renowned artists such as Giovanni Lanfranco, Massimo Stanzione, and Francesco Bassano. Notably, a painting of Saint Augustine, once attributed to the Flemish school, has been recently credited to Peter Paul Rubens . The church’s dome, which collapsed in 1657, was reconstructed in 1675, adding to its historical narrative .

Beyond its artistic and architectural significance, the Iglesia de la Purísima plays an active role in Salamanca’s religious life. During Holy Week, it serves as the starting point for the “Procesión del Despojado,” a significant event that traverses the city’s historic streets .

For those interested in Baroque art, history, or seeking a tranquil space for reflection, the Iglesia de la Purísima offers a profound and enriching experience in the heart of Salamanca.
