Museu Arqueológico

The Museu Arqueológico de Barcelos is an open-air archaeological museum located in the charming town of Barcelos, Portugal, right by the picturesque Cávado River. It is housed in the ruins of the Palácio dos Condes de Barcelos, a grand medieval palace built in the early 15th century that was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1755. The museum’s striking setting amid the palace’s stone ruins creates a unique atmosphere for exploring Portugal’s rich archaeological past.

The collection primarily consists of Romanesque and Gothic sculptures, epigraphs, architectural fragments, and funerary monuments, many of which were uncovered during excavations in the region. One of the most famous pieces is the Pedra de Caminha, a Romanesque tombstone with intricate carvings and inscriptions.

Visitors will also encounter ceramics, tiles, and religious artifacts that reflect the artistic and cultural evolution of the area. The museum’s outdoor layout allows you to wander freely among the ruins, taking in the artifacts as well as enjoying beautiful views of the Cávado River and the historic Barcelos Bridge.

A visit to the Museu Arqueológico de Barcelos offers not only a glimpse into the medieval and Roman past of the region but also a serene and contemplative experience in a scenic riverside setting. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in history, architecture, or simply exploring unique historical sites.

Visit Notes

The museum is free to enter and it’s a quick walk around. If you’re in the area it’s worth it to stop in, but don’t go out of your way unless you have a deep interest in old stone carvings.
