Altes Rathaus

The Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) in Regensburg is a must-visit for anyone interested in medieval history, politics, and architecture. Located in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Old Town, this historic building dates back to the 13th century and played a crucial role in the Holy Roman Empire, serving as the seat of the Perpetual Imperial Diet (Immerwährender Reichstag) from 1663 to 1806.

One of the highlights of visiting the Altes Rathaus is the Imperial Chamber, where emperors and representatives from across the empire debated key political decisions. The medieval courtroom and torture chamber in the basement provide a chilling insight into the justice system of the time. The building itself is a stunning example of Gothic and Baroque architecture, with a beautifully preserved facade, grand interiors, and historical artifacts that transport visitors back in time.

Guided tours offer a fascinating look at the building’s history, including its role in shaping European politics. Whether you’re passionate about history, intrigued by medieval law, or simply want to experience one of Regensburg’s most significant landmarks, the Altes Rathaus offers a unique and immersive journey into the past.
