St. Emmeram’s Abbey in Regensburg is a stunning and historically significant site that’s well worth a visit for anyone exploring the city. Located just a short distance from the city center, this former Benedictine monastery dates back to the 8th century and is one of the most important religious and architectural landmarks in Regensburg.
The Abbey is set in a beautiful park and is famous for its impressive Romanesque and Baroque architecture. The most notable feature of the abbey is its St. Emmeram’s Church, which boasts an intricate interior filled with baroque frescoes, altars, and stunning stucco work. The Abbey’s cloisters are serene and peaceful, providing visitors with a chance to step back in time and admire the medieval architecture of this important monastic complex.
One of the most significant aspects of St. Emmeram’s Abbey is its connection to the regal history of the region. It was once the residence of noble families and royalty, and today it houses the Thurn und Taxis family, one of Germany’s most prominent aristocratic families. The abbey’s grounds also include the Thurn und Taxis Palace, a baroque palace that is still home to the family today.
For visitors, St. Emmeram’s Abbey offers a fascinating blend of religious history, architecture, and royal heritage. Whether you’re exploring the church’s ornate interior, walking through the peaceful cloisters, or simply enjoying the tranquil gardens, St. Emmeram’s Abbey is a wonderful stop that provides both a cultural experience and a sense of the historical depth of Regensburg.
Visit Notes
If you only have time for one church while in Regensburg, it should be this one. The details in this church are incredible, you almost don’t know where to look. Take your time here and really look at the frescoes, statues, and tombs. It’s free to enter the Abbey and when we were there at the end of May, we had the place almost entirely to ourselves.
