St. Peter’s Cathedral (Regensburger Dom) is the most iconic landmark in Regensburg and one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Bavaria. Towering over the city’s medieval Old Town, this stunning cathedral has been the spiritual heart of Regensburg for centuries and remains an absolute must-visit for anyone exploring the city.
Construction began in the 13th century and continued for over 600 years, resulting in the breathtaking twin spires, intricate stone carvings, and magnificent stained-glass windows that still awe visitors today. The interior is equally impressive, featuring towering columns, ribbed vaults, and beautiful medieval stained glass from the 14th century that bathes the space in colorful light.
One of the cathedral’s most famous attractions is the Regensburger Domspatzen, the world-renowned boys’ choir, which has been performing sacred music for over 1,000 years. If you have the chance, attending a service or concert is an unforgettable experience.
Visitors can also explore the cathedral treasury, which houses religious artifacts, and the crypt, where past bishops of Regensburg are buried. Located in the heart of the Old Town, St. Peter’s Cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a masterpiece of medieval art and architecture, making it an essential stop for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone looking to experience the soul of Regensburg.
Visit Notes
This is a gorgeous Gothic church, but boy oh boy, it was dark inside. I’m amazed I got any pictures at all. I literally had to stop and let my eyes adjust for a minute when I walked inside or I would have tripped over something. I don’t know if that’s the norm or if it had something to do with the renovations happening on the exterior. Either way, it’s well worth a walk around if you’re in the area. If you can, visit for one of their organ concerts. They turn the lights on inside so you can see everything better and you also get to enjoy the organ music.
