Danube Gorge in Kelheim

The Danube Gorge (Donaudurchbruch) in Kelheim, Germany, is one of Bavaria’s most breathtaking natural wonders, offering stunning limestone cliffs, serene river views, and a rich history. This dramatic river passage, stretching for about 5 kilometers, was carved by the Danube River over thousands of years, creating towering rock formations that rise up to 70 meters (230 feet) high on either side of the water.

One of the best ways to experience the gorge is by taking a boat tour from Kelheim to the historic Weltenburg Abbey. As you glide along the river, you’ll see incredible rock formations with names like Peter and Paul, the Bishop’s Mitre, and Napoleon’s Suitcase, shaped by centuries of natural erosion. The journey through the gorge feels almost mystical, especially when the boat weaves between the massive cliffs, which seem to close in around you.

The Danube Gorge is also a great destination for hiking and nature lovers, with scenic trails running along the river, offering panoramic views from above. The surrounding Altmühl Valley Nature Park provides even more opportunities for outdoor exploration.

Whether you’re looking for a peaceful boat ride, a scenic hike, or a glimpse into Bavaria’s natural beauty, the Danube Gorge is a must-visit. It’s a perfect combination of stunning landscapes, fascinating geology, and a touch of history, making it one of the most unforgettable experiences in the region.
