Ehekarussell-Brunnen

The Ehekarussell-Brunnen (Marriage Carousel Fountain) in Nuremberg is one of the city’s most intriguing and controversial modern fountains. Located near the Weißer Turm (White Tower), this large bronze fountain, created in 1981 by artist Jürgen Weber, is an artistic interpretation of the ups and downs of marriage—depicting both its joys and struggles in a dramatic and sometimes grotesque way.

The fountain is inspired by the poem “Bitter-Sweet Married Life” (Das bittersüße Leben) by Hans Sachs, a 16th-century Nuremberg poet. It features larger-than-life sculptures of a married couple at different stages of their relationship, from the passionate beginnings of love to conflicts, old age, and even death. Some of the statues are romantic and tender, while others depict chaotic and nightmarish scenes, making the fountain a fascinating, if unconventional, commentary on marriage.

Visitors are often struck by the bold artistic expression, the dark humor, and the emotional intensity of the sculptures. While some find it disturbing, others appreciate it as a unique and thought-provoking work of art.

Whether you see it as a satirical masterpiece or an unusual curiosity, the Ehekarussell-Brunnen is one of Nuremberg’s most distinctive fountains and is well worth a visit for those interested in modern sculpture, local culture, or simply something a little out of the ordinary.
