Upper Parish Church

The Upper Parish Church (Obere Pfarre) in Bamberg is a stunning Gothic church and the only purely Gothic parish church in the city. Perched on a hill above the Old Town, this impressive structure offers breathtaking architecture, religious art, and panoramic views of Bamberg’s historic center.

Built in the 14th century, the church features a striking high-vaulted ceiling, beautiful stained glass windows, and an intricate sandstone façade that showcases the craftsmanship of the medieval period. Inside, visitors will find a richly decorated Baroque altar, elegant stucco work, and an awe-inspiring pulpit, which contrast with the church’s otherwise Gothic design.

One of the church’s main highlights is its Marian altar, which is considered a masterpiece of Bamberg’s religious art. The Upper Parish Church is still an active place of worship, and its peaceful atmosphere makes it a great place for quiet reflection.

For those who appreciate historical churches, stunning architecture, and religious history, the Upper Parish Church is a must-visit in Bamberg. Its location also provides a fantastic opportunity to explore the surrounding picturesque streets and enjoy views over the city.

Visit Notes

This church is a hidden gem in Bamberg. It’s a bit outside the historic center, but only barely, so it’s easy to visit. I felt it was prettier and more interesting to visit than the Bamberg Cathedral. Definitely worth the couple minutes walk.
