The Medieval Crime Museum (Mittelalterliches Kriminalmuseum) in Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a fascinating and eerie look into the history of law, justice, and punishment in medieval and early modern Europe. Spanning over 1,000 years of legal history, this unique museum is housed in a historic building and showcases a vast collection of torture devices, legal documents, and medieval criminal laws.
As you explore its multi-level exhibits, you’ll encounter gruesome instruments of punishment such as iron masks for public shaming, the infamous rack, thumbscrews, and the spiked chair. But the museum is not just about torture—it also provides an in-depth look at medieval law enforcement, including the roles of judges, executioners, and town guards. There are displays on witch trials, medieval police methods, public punishments, and even the evolution of prisons.
One of the most chilling yet intriguing sections covers trial by ordeal and superstition-based justice, showcasing how people in the past believed guilt or innocence could be determined through fire, water, and divine intervention.
Despite its dark theme, the museum is well-organized, informative, and historically rich, making it an engaging visit for history enthusiasts, curious travelers, and even families with older children. It offers a unique and thought-provoking glimpse into the legal past—one that makes you appreciate how far society has come in terms of justice and human rights. If you’re in Rothenburg, this museum is a must-see for a truly immersive journey into the darker side of medieval history.
Visit Notes
I was so excited to visit this museum, but the reality of it left me wanting. I got a sense that much of what I was seeing wasn’t authentic, there were a lot of other people there taking up space, and many of the exhibits were more about law and procedure than torture. Overall, I didn’t think it was worth the price of admission. I did, however, learn that there is no evidence that the iron maiden was ever actually used on a person and that it may have been created as a marketing tool for the 1857 Nuremberg Torture Exhibition. Fascinating.
