The Igreja de São Paulo in Lisbon is a beautiful and historic church located near Cais do Sodré, just a short walk from the lively Pink Street and the Tagus River waterfront. Originally built in the 16th century, it was later rebuilt in the 18th century after being damaged in the devastating 1755 earthquake. The church is a fine example of Pombaline architecture, characterized by its elegant yet simple façade and harmonious proportions.
Inside, visitors are greeted by a stunning baroque and rococo interior, featuring intricate gilded woodwork, beautiful azulejo (traditional Portuguese tile) panels, and an ornate high altar. The ceiling paintings and side chapels add to the church’s rich artistic heritage. Despite being somewhat off the beaten tourist path, Igreja de São Paulo is a hidden gem, offering a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city. Whether you’re an architecture enthusiast or just looking for a quiet moment of reflection, this church is well worth a visit!
