Jardim Botânico da Ajuda

The Jardim Botânico da Ajuda in Lisbon is a beautiful and serene botanical garden located near the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda. Established in 1768, it is the oldest botanical garden in Portugal, created under the direction of the Italian botanist Domingos Vandelli during the reign of King José I. Originally designed as a teaching garden for the Ajuda Royal Palace, it was intended to house a wide variety of plant species from across the Portuguese Empire.

The garden spans approximately 3.5 hectares and is arranged in a classical, terraced style with two distinct levels. The upper terrace offers stunning panoramic views of the Tagus River and the 25th of April Bridge, making it a popular spot for photography and relaxation. From there, visitors can also enjoy the sight of fountains, statues, and manicured parterres that reflect its elegant, 18th-century design.

The lower terrace is home to an impressive variety of exotic plants, trees, and flowers, including many species collected during Portugal’s explorations abroad. Highlights include magnolias, cacti, succulents, medicinal herbs, and rare tropical plants. Additionally, the garden boasts a remarkable dragon tree (Dracaena draco), which is over 400 years old and one of the oldest of its kind in Europe.

As you wander through the tranquil pathways, you’ll find beautiful ornamental ponds, shaded groves, and meticulously landscaped flowerbeds. It’s a fantastic place for anyone interested in botany, history, or simply enjoying a peaceful, green oasis away from the bustling city.

The Jardim Botânico da Ajuda is open year-round and offers a lovely break from sightseeing, particularly on a sunny day. It’s also a wonderful spot to visit in combination with the nearby Palácio Nacional da Ajuda and the Museu do Tesouro Real.

Visit Notes

If you’re in the area to see the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda (and you should be!) you shouldn’t miss this garden. It’s a peaceful place to explore and visit with the peacocks. We were here on a hot day and there were plenty of shady spots to relax and drink in the views.
