Erriberako Merkatua

Situated along the banks of the Nervión River in Bilbao’s historic Casco Viejo, the Erriberako Merkatua—also known as Mercado de la Ribera—is a vibrant hub of Basque culture, cuisine, and architecture. Recognized by the Guinness World Records in 1990 as the largest covered food market in the world, it spans over 10,000 square meters and houses more than 60 vendors offering a diverse array of products, including fresh produce, meats, seafood, cheeses, and local specialties .

Designed by architect Pedro Ispizua and inaugurated in 1929, the market’s unique structure resembles an inverted ship—a tribute to Bilbao’s maritime heritage and the significance of the Nervión River in the city’s development . The building underwent extensive renovations in 2010, blending its historic charm with modern amenities to enhance the shopping experience.

Beyond its architectural allure, the market offers a sensory feast. Visitors can meander through stalls brimming with colorful fruits and vegetables, fresh seafood, and artisanal goods. The market also features bars and bistros where one can savor traditional Basque pintxos accompanied by local txakoli wine, providing an authentic taste of the region’s culinary delights .

Whether you’re a food enthusiast, architecture aficionado, or cultural explorer, Erriberako Merkatua offers a rich and immersive experience that captures the essence of Bilbao’s vibrant spirit.
