Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari

The Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari—often just called the Frari—is one of Venice’s most impressive and historically rich churches, tucked into the lively Campo dei Frari in the San Polo district. It’s a grand example of Venetian Gothic architecture, built largely in the 14th and 15th centuries with soaring brick walls and a tall bell tower that’s among the highest in the city. The interior is striking: a Latin-cross layout with three naves, ribbed vaults, and enormous columns creates a sense of both spiritual openness and architectural drama. The basilica also retains the only original rood screen (or medieval choir screen) still in place in Venice—an evocative reminder of its long history.

What makes the Frari especially rewarding for visitors is its artistic treasures and tombs of Venetian greats. Above the high altar hangs Titian’s monumental Assumption of the Virgin, one of the most celebrated Renaissance paintings in the world and a must-see centerpiece. The church also houses Titian’s Pesaro Madonna and a serene sacristy altarpiece by Giovanni Bellini, plus works by other masters like Bartolomeo Vivarini and a rare wooden statue of Saint John the Baptist by Donatello. Many notable figures are buried here too—including Titian himself, the composer Claudio Monteverdi, and various doges—so walking through the Frari feels like a journey through Venice’s artistic and civic history.
