Basilica di San Miniato

Perched on a hill above Florence near the Piazzale Michelangelo, the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte is one of the city’s finest Romanesque churches, celebrated for its striking white-and-green marble façade, geometric inlay, and elevated, fortress-like presence. The church’s exterior and terraced setting offer sweeping skyline views and a peaceful approach through cypress-lined paths and cloistered gardens, making the visit feel like a retreat from the crowded historic center.

Inside, the basilica rewards quiet contemplation with a luminous, well-preserved interior: a marble-encrusted high altar, a beautifully decorated 13th-century mosaic in the apse, and a serene 11th–13th-century crypt said to house the tomb of St. Miniato. The adjoining cloister and chapels contain funerary monuments and frescoes; allow about 45–90 minutes to explore, combine the visit with nearby viewpoints, and wear modest dress for this active religious site.
