The Duomo

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (the Duomo) dominates Florence’s skyline with its vast Gothic nave and Brunelleschi’s revolutionary red-tiled dome—construction began in 1296 to Arnolfo di Cambio’s design and continued across the 14th–15th centuries, making the building a layered testament to medieval and early Renaissance civic ambition. The polychrome marble exterior and ornate façade frame an immense interior whose scale, pointed arches, and patterned floors convey the city’s wealth and communal identity; the cathedral complex includes Giotto’s adjacent campanile and the Baptistery, forming the heart of Florence’s religious and civic center.

Inside, climb Brunelleschi’s dome (via 463 steps) to inspect the dome’s inner frescoes of the Last Judgment by Vasari and Zuccari and to enjoy panoramic views of Florence; the nave contains notable works such as the clock by Paolo Uccello and various chapels and monuments.
