Comillas

Comillas is a charming town located in the northern coast of Spain, in the autonomous community of Cantabria. Known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich architectural heritage, Comillas is a popular destination that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural treasures, and a relaxed coastal atmosphere.

One of the town’s most iconic landmarks is the El Capricho, a building designed by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí’s inspiration for this structure was drawn from nature, and it features intricate floral motifs, vibrant ceramic tiles, and ornate ironwork that embellish the exterior. The building’s shape is reminiscent of a fairytale cottage, with its tilted walls, turrets, and peculiar angles, making it truly stand out among its surroundings.

Comillas is also home to the Palacio de Sobrellano, an imposing neo-gothic mansion that serves as a striking example of architectural grandeur. This stunning palace was designed by another renowned architect, Joan Martorell, and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Inside, you can find an impressive collection of art and furniture that offers a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the past.

As you wander through the streets of Comillas, you’ll be charmed by its well-preserved historic center. The town’s narrow, winding streets are lined with traditional houses adorned with colorful facades and flower-filled balconies. There are numerous shops, cafes, and restaurants where you can indulge in local delicacies and soak up the relaxed atmosphere.

Comillas also boasts stunning beaches that are perfect for those seeking sun, sand, and sea. Playa de Comillas, the main beach, offers a picturesque setting with golden sand and crystal-clear waters. It’s an ideal spot to relax, take a refreshing swim, or enjoy water sports such as surfing or paddleboarding.

For nature enthusiasts, the surrounding area of Comillas is a paradise waiting to be explored. The town is nestled amidst lush green landscapes, rolling hills, and dramatic cliffs overlooking the Cantabrian Sea. You can embark on hiking trails that offer panoramic views or take a leisurely stroll along the coastal path, breathing in the fresh sea breeze.

In addition to its natural and architectural wonders, Comillas hosts various cultural events and festivals throughout the year. From traditional music concerts to vibrant street celebrations, there’s always something happening in the town that showcases the local culture and traditions.

Visit Notes

We stopped in Comillas on our way to Bilbao. I found it to be a sleepy, but beautiful town on the water. It was a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours, but I couldn’t imagine staying here for much longer. However, if you like hanging out and relaxing on the beach, this might be the place for you. One thing I wish I’d known is that there is a laundromat facing the beach. Had I known, I would have prepared my laundry to do while we explored.
