This gives it the appearance of a fairy-tale tower, standing alone amidst the picturesque countryside. The interior is preserved in its historical style, allowing visitors to see how a medieval nobleman lived, with antique furniture, wooden beams, and small living quarters.

Nestled along the Tauber River, Toppler Castle offers a serene and scenic atmosphere, perfect for photography and nature walks. You can reach it by following the Taubertalweg hiking trail, which winds through the valley and provides breathtaking views of Rothenburgโ€™s skyline.

For history lovers and those seeking a quiet escape from the townโ€™s busy streets, Toppler Castle is a hidden gem that beautifully blends medieval history, unique architecture, and natural beauty.

Built in the 18th century as the private chapel for the Prince-Bishops, this small yet incredibly opulent church is a true hidden gem within the palace complex.

Designed by Balthasar Neumann, the church’s exterior blends seamlessly with the rest of the Residence, but stepping inside reveals an interior of lavish decoration, intricate stucco work, and breathtaking frescoes. The ceiling frescoes, painted by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, depict heavenly scenes with rich colors and dramatic movement, while the altars, made of exquisite marble, add to the sense of grandeur. The church’s gold-accented ornamentation and beautifully detailed sculptures create an atmosphere of divine elegance.

Whether youโ€™re interested in art, history, or religious architecture, the Court Church is a must-see when visiting the Wรผrzburg Residence. It offers a glimpse into the spiritual life of the Prince-Bishops and showcases some of the most spectacular Baroque artistry in Germany.

    Visit Notes

Despite the crowds in the Residence just next door, no one seemed to be walking over to see the Hofkirche. I don’t understand why because it’s truly lovely. Anyway, I’m not complaining, because my daughter and I were alone in the church. If you are visiting the Residence, be sure to pop into the Hofkirche. It’s small and quick to visit, and it’s definitely worth your time.
