Hello, Iโm Veronica
The sky is not completely dark at night. Were the sky absolutely dark, one would not be able to see the silhouette of an object against the sky.

Bamberg Castle

Bamberg Castle (Altenburg) in Bamberg is a stunning medieval hilltop fortress that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside. Perched atop the highest hill in Bamberg at 386 meters (1,266 feet) above sea level, it is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and a fantastic destination for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and nature seekers alike.
The castle dates back to at least 1109 and was once an important defensive stronghold. In the 14th century, it became the residence of Bambergโs prince-bishops, but much of the structure was destroyed in 1553 during the Second Margrave War. The castle was later restored in the 19th century, and today it still retains its medieval charm, featuring massive stone walls, a tall tower, and charming half-timbered buildings.
Visitors can explore the castle grounds, climb the tower for spectacular 360-degree views, and stroll through the courtyard to admire the well-preserved medieval architecture.
Bamberg Castle is a must-visit for anyone in Bamberg, offering a mix of history, stunning scenery, and a touch of medieval romance. It can be reached by a scenic hike or a short drive from the city center, making it a perfect spot for a day trip or a relaxing escape from the bustling Old Town.
Visit Notes
We chose to walk to the castle from the old town of Bamberg. The walk up winds through some fields (maybe wheat? I confess to not knowing my crops well) with scenic views over town. It’s a pleasant walk that took us about half an hour. As you get closer to the castle it gets a little steeper, but nothing a reasonably healthy person should have a problem with. There are benches you can use for rest if necessary. The last part of the hike is through the trees, so at least there is shade during the warmer months.
The castle itself doesn’t have that much to look at, but you can climb the tower for a couple of Euro and walk around to take in the scenery. There is a small cafe where you can grab a drink and relax.

Upper Parish Church

The Upper Parish Church (Obere Pfarre) in Bamberg is a stunning Gothic church and the only purely Gothic parish church in the city. Perched on a hill above the Old Town, this impressive structure offers breathtaking architecture, religious art, and panoramic views of Bambergโs historic center.
Built in the 14th century, the church features a striking high-vaulted ceiling, beautiful stained glass windows, and an intricate sandstone faรงade that showcases the craftsmanship of the medieval period. Inside, visitors will find a richly decorated Baroque altar, elegant stucco work, and an awe-inspiring pulpit, which contrast with the churchโs otherwise Gothic design.
One of the churchโs main highlights is its Marian altar, which is considered a masterpiece of Bambergโs religious art. The Upper Parish Church is still an active place of worship, and its peaceful atmosphere makes it a great place for quiet reflection.
For those who appreciate historical churches, stunning architecture, and religious history, the Upper Parish Church is a must-visit in Bamberg. Its location also provides a fantastic opportunity to explore the surrounding picturesque streets and enjoy views over the city.
Visit Notes
This church is a hidden gem in Bamberg. It’s a bit outside the historic center, but only barely, so it’s easy to visit. I felt it was prettier and more interesting to visit than the Bamberg Cathedral. Definitely worth the couple minutes walk.
