    The Beautiful Fountain

The Beautiful Fountain (Schรถner Brunnen) in Nuremberg is one of the cityโ€™s most iconic landmarks, located in the heart of the Hauptmarkt (Main Market Square). This stunning Gothic fountain, built in the 14th century, stands at about 19 meters (62 feet) tall and resembles a medieval church spire, richly decorated with colorful statues and intricate details.

The fountain features 40 figures arranged in four levels, representing the Holy Roman Empire, biblical figures, philosophers, and important historical figures from the Middle Ages. At the base, youโ€™ll find the “Golden Ring”, a small brass ring embedded into the ironwork. According to local legend, turning this ring three times is said to bring good luck and a wish fulfilledโ€”a tradition that has been followed by both locals and visitors for centuries.

A visit to the Beautiful Fountain offers not only a glimpse into Nurembergโ€™s medieval craftsmanship, but also a chance to engage in this charming local tradition. Whether you admire its artistic details, learn about its historical significance, or simply make a wish at the Golden Ring, the Schรถner Brunnen is a must-see when exploring Nurembergโ€™s Old Town.

Located in the heart of Nurembergโ€™s Old Town, this Gothic church dates back to the 13th century and is dedicated to St. Sebald, one of the cityโ€™s patron saints.

Inside, visitors are treated to a stunning display of Gothic architecture, with vaulted ceilings, intricate stained-glass windows, and a peaceful, spiritual atmosphere. One of the highlights of the church is the tomb of St. Sebald, which is housed in an elaborate shrine created by the famous artist Peter Vischer in the 16th century. The tomb is a masterpiece of Renaissance art, featuring exquisite detail and symbolism.

    Imperial Castle of Nuremberg

The Imperial Castle of Nuremberg (Kaiserburg) is one of the most iconic landmarks in Nuremberg, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into the city’s medieval history and its role as the center of the Holy Roman Empire. Perched high on a hill, the castle offers breathtaking views of the city below, making it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Nuremberg.

The castle complex consists of several areas, including the Imperial Castle itself, the Palas (residential building), the Sinwell Tower, and the Deep Well. Visitors can explore the castle’s beautiful rooms, including the Emperorโ€™s Hall, and discover how the medieval emperors used the castle as a fortress, royal residence, and seat of power. The Sinwell Tower provides one of the best panoramic views of Nuremberg, while the Deep Well reveals the clever medieval engineering that allowed the castle to supply water even during sieges.

Youโ€™ll also find the Imperial Castle Museum within the complex, which showcases artifacts, weapons, and exhibitions about the castleโ€™s history, as well as the Holy Roman Empire.

The castle is an excellent place to spend a few hours, whether youโ€™re interested in history, architecture, or just want to enjoy the fantastic views of Nuremberg. With its mixture of history, culture, and stunning panoramas, the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the city.

    Visit Notes

I don’t see how you can go to Nuremberg and not visit the castle. You have options here in terms of what you can see. You could just view the courtyard and gardens of the castle while soaking in the panoramic views over town, all for free. You can also choose to buy tickets to visit the interior of the castle as well as the Deep Well and Sinwell Tower. The Deep Well was interesting, but I think it was skippable especially if you have to wait a while for the next tour opening. The tower offers amazing views over town as well as pictures around the perimeter showing what that particular view looked like after the destruction of WWII. I very much enjoyed this portion of the castle, and it doesn’t take all that long to get through. The interior of the castle itself was just okay. I found the first few rooms to be promising, but then it went a bit downhill after that, becoming less interesting as the tour went on. I still think it’s worthwhile to do while you’re in town, just keep your expectations in check.

    Hauptmarkt

The Hauptmarkt in Nuremberg is the heart of the cityโ€™s Old Town (Altstadt) and a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the vibrant atmosphere and rich history of Nuremberg. This bustling town square is surrounded by historic buildings and is a central hub for locals and tourists alike.

At the center of the Hauptmarkt stands the iconic Schรถner Brunnen (Beautiful Fountain), a stunning medieval fountain with intricately carved figures, including those representing saints and historical figures. The fountain is a popular photo spot and a great place to begin your exploration of the square. The Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche), a magnificent Gothic church, is located directly on the square and is famous for its Astronomical Clock, which puts on a show of moving figures every day at noon.

Throughout the year, the Hauptmarkt is the site of various markets and events, most notably the famous Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt (Christmas Market), which attracts visitors from all over the world. During the holiday season, the square transforms into a winter wonderland, with twinkling lights, festive stalls, and the chance to sample Nurembergโ€™s famous gingerbread cookies (Lebkuchen) and Nรผrnberger sausages.

Aside from the markets, the Hauptmarkt is lined with charming medieval buildings, including the Kunsthalle and historic guild houses, making it an excellent place to stroll, enjoy local food, or simply soak in the beauty of Nurembergโ€™s architectural heritage.

    Visit Notes

This is a typical European main square, in the best way possible. People congregate here to meet with friends, eat ice cream, or just enjoy music. There wasn’t a market set up while we were in town, but I can easily imagine the hustle and bustle. Do yourself a favor, grab an ice cream or a pastry, find a place to settle in and watch the world go by for a bit.

    Nuremberg Historic Bridges

The historic bridges of Nuremberg’s Old Town are a fascinating and scenic part of the city, each with its own story and charm. These bridges span the Pegnitz River, connecting various sections of the city, and offer beautiful views of both medieval and modern Nuremberg.

    Henkersteg (Hangman’s Bridge)

One of the most picturesque and historically significant bridges is the Henkersteg, which connects the northern and southern parts of the Old Town. This charming wooden bridge is named after the nearby former executionerโ€™s house (Henkerhaus), where the city’s executioner lived. The bridge offers a glimpse into the city’s medieval past, and walking across it gives visitors a sense of the historic atmosphere of Nuremberg. It’s a lovely spot for photos, especially with its views of the river and old buildings on either side.

    Fleischbrรผcke (Meat Bridge)

The Fleischbrรผcke is another iconic bridge that crosses the Pegnitz River, named after the nearby meat market that used to stand here. Itโ€™s a stone bridge with medieval origins, offering beautiful views of the cityscape. The bridge is well-located near several of Nurembergโ€™s historic landmarks, and crossing it allows visitors to explore the Old Town and discover charming narrow streets, shops, and cafes. The sculptures and reliefs on the bridge’s columns add to its historical appeal.

    Museumsbrรผcke (Museum Bridge)

As the name suggests, the Museumsbrรผcke is located near some of Nurembergโ€™s finest cultural institutions, like the Germanisches Nationalmuseum and the Nuremberg Toy Museum. This bridge offers easy access to the southern part of the Old Town and is often a quieter spot to enjoy the views of the river and the surrounding historic buildings. Itโ€™s perfect for a peaceful walk or for crossing between museums.

    Kettensteg (Chain Bridge)

The Kettensteg, a pedestrian-only bridge, is one of the more unique bridges in Nuremberg due to its suspension design. Built in the 19th century, the bridge is supported by chains rather than stone pillars, which makes it stand out in a city filled with traditional medieval architecture. It offers stunning views of the river and Nuremberg Castle, as well as the chance to walk between two scenic areas of the Old Town.

These bridges offer more than just functional crossingsโ€”they are steeped in history and provide beautiful vantage points to appreciate the medieval charm of Nurembergโ€™s Old Town. Whether you’re crossing for a practical reason or simply taking in the views, each bridge offers something unique, from historical anecdotes to picturesque scenery. They are perfect for those wanting to capture the essence of Nurembergโ€™s past, while enjoying a peaceful stroll along the Pegnitz River.

    Visit Notes

For me, the best part of visiting Nuremberg was walking along the river and through the old town. I enjoyed it more than almost any of the sights in town (with the exception of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, which is now one of my all-time favorite museums). I spent my mornings walking along the river and across the bridges, ambling through the medieval buildings of the WeiรŸgerbergasse. First thing in the morning, you’ll have the city to yourself and you can enjoy the ducks paddling peacefully along the river.
