The most notable feature of the abbey is its St. Emmeram’s Church, which boasts an intricate interior filled with baroque frescoes, altars, and stunning stucco work. The Abbeyโ€™s cloisters are serene and peaceful, providing visitors with a chance to step back in time and admire the medieval architecture of this important monastic complex.

One of the most significant aspects of St. Emmeramโ€™s Abbey is its connection to the regal history of the region. It was once the residence of noble families and royalty, and today it houses the Thurn und Taxis family, one of Germanyโ€™s most prominent aristocratic families. The abbeyโ€™s grounds also include the Thurn und Taxis Palace, a baroque palace that is still home to the family today.

    Visit Notes

If you only have time for one church while in Regensburg, it should be this one. The details in this church are incredible, you almost don’t know where to look. Take your time here and really look at the frescoes, statues, and tombs. It’s free to enter the Abbey and when we were there at the end of May, we had the place almost entirely to ourselves.
