St. Jakobskirche

Built between 1311 and 1485, this Gothic masterpiece was an essential stop for pilgrims traveling along the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela.
The church’s most famous highlight is the Holy Blood Altarpiece, carved by the legendary wood sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider in the early 1500s. This intricate masterpiece depicts the Last Supper, with an emphasis on realistic facial expressions and fine details. At its center is a relic of Christ’s blood, making it a deeply significant religious site.
Other must-see features include the High Altar, an exquisite work of late-Gothic craftsmanship, and the stunning stained-glass windows in the east choir, which date back to 1350 and bathe the interior in colorful light. Visitors should also take a moment to admire the organ, one of the largest in the region, which fills the church with powerful, resonant music during concerts and services.

Normally, I’m a church girl. There’s almost nothing I love more than historic old churches (except maybe chocolate). However, when we got to the church, I just didn’t feel like paying to enter, so I skipped it. I don’t know… it just seemed too bare to warrant a fee for entry. In the grand scheme of things, I don’t feel like I missed much by not going in.

Rothenburg City Walls
The medieval city walls of Rothenburg ob der Tauber are one of the town’s most iconic and well-preserved features, offering visitors a chance to step back in time and experience the town as it was in the Middle Ages. These fortifications, originally built in the 12th century, were expanded over time and played a crucial role in protecting the city, especially during the Thirty Years’ War in the 17th century. Unlike many other medieval towns, Rothenburg’s walls survived largely intact, allowing modern visitors to walk along their elevated stone pathways and explore their historic towers and gates.
The best way to experience the walls is by taking a self-guided walk along the Town Wall Walk, which extends for about 4 kilometers around the town. Entrance is free, and visitors can start at multiple access points, such as the Rödertor Gate or the Klingentor Gate. Some sections are covered, while others provide open-air views of the town and surrounding countryside.
Best Things to See on the Walls
- Klingentor Gate – One of the tallest and most impressive towers, offering fantastic panoramic views of the town.
- Rödertor Gate – Another key access point, where you can climb the tower for a small fee to get a bird’s-eye view of Rothenburg.
- The Covered Walkways – These wooden-roofed paths along the walls provide a unique medieval atmosphere and a great way to see the town’s half-timbered houses and red rooftops from above.
- The Spital Bastion – A massive fortified complex at the southern end of the walls, designed to protect the city with double gates, courtyards, and defensive walls.
- Plaques and Markers – Throughout the wall, you’ll find dedication plaques from people around the world who contributed to the restoration of the walls after World War II.

Rothenburg Castle Garden
The Rothenburg Castle Garden (Burggarten) is one of the most picturesque and peaceful spots in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Tauber Valley and the town’s medieval skyline. Located on the site of the former Hohenstaufen Castle, which was destroyed in an earthquake in 1356, the garden is all that remains of the once-mighty fortress.
Today, the Castle Garden is a beautifully landscaped green space with manicured flower beds, ancient trees, and charming stone pathways. Scattered throughout are historic sculptures and monuments, including eight sandstone statues representing the four seasons and the four elements. The viewing terraces provide some of the best photo opportunities in Rothenburg, especially at sunrise or sunset when the town’s red rooftops and medieval towers glow in the golden light.
The Castle Garden is a perfect spot for a relaxing stroll, a quiet break from sightseeing, or a romantic walk. Whether you’re a history lover, photographer, or simply someone who enjoys nature, this serene retreat is well worth a visit while exploring Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
Inside the Castle Garden, you’ll find the Blasiuskapelle. It stands as the last remnant of the once-grand Hohenstaufen Castle, destroyed during the 1356 Basel earthquake. The stones from the castle were repurposed for municipal buildings, and wooden galleries were added in the 17th and 20th centuries. Today, the chapel serves as a memorial for the victims of both World Wars. Nearby, the Pogrom-Gedenkstein commemorates the 1298 massacre of about 400 Jews, who were killed after seeking refuge in the old imperial castle.
Visit Notes
A small, but beautiful garden with views out over the valley surrounding Rothenburg. I recommend taking a walk through and enjoying the flowers and birds. The Blasiuskapelle is one small room, but if you’re there, definitely take a look around and pay your respects to the fallen.

The Rothenburg Museum (Rothenburg Museum im ehemaligen Dominikanerkloster, formerly known as the Reichsstadtmuseum) is a must-visit for anyone interested in the history, art, and culture of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Housed in a former Dominican convent dating back to 1258, the museum provides a fascinating journey through the town’s medieval past, offering visitors a chance to see how Rothenburg evolved over the centuries.
Inside, you’ll find an extensive collection of artifacts, including medieval weapons, armor, religious art, furniture, and historical documents. Some of the most notable exhibits include:
- The Convent Kitchen, which has remained almost unchanged since the 13th century, offering a glimpse into monastic life.
- The Rothenburg Town History, detailing the city’s rise as a Free Imperial City, its decline after the Thirty Years’ War, and its resurgence as a tourist destination.
- The Jewish Collection, showcasing artifacts and documents related to Rothenburg’s Jewish community in the Middle Ages.
- The Rothenburg Executioner’s Sword, part of the museum’s extensive medieval crime and punishment exhibit.
The museum’s historic setting adds to the experience, as you walk through the well-preserved cloisters and ancient stone walls of the former convent. This museum has a wide variety of historical artifacts, including the largest beer stein collection I’ve ever seen. As with most museums in the area, there was an interesting exhibit about WWII and how it affected the town as well as the rebuilding efforts. I recommend a visit if you’re in town. We didn’t see a single person in the museum other than the ticket lady. I always love getting away from the crowds.

Toppler Castle
Toppler Castle (Topplerschlösschen) is a charming medieval tower house located in the Tauber Valley, just outside the walls of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Built in 1388 by the influential mayor Heinrich Toppler, this small yet distinctive castle served as both a residential retreat and a defensive structure.
What makes Toppler Castle unique is its unusual design—a fortified stone base with a half-timbered house perched on top. This gives it the appearance of a fairy-tale tower, standing alone amidst the picturesque countryside. The interior is preserved in its historical style, allowing visitors to see how a medieval nobleman lived, with antique furniture, wooden beams, and small living quarters.
Nestled along the Tauber River, Toppler Castle offers a serene and scenic atmosphere, perfect for photography and nature walks. You can reach it by following the Taubertalweg hiking trail, which winds through the valley and provides breathtaking views of Rothenburg’s skyline.
For history lovers and those seeking a quiet escape from the town’s busy streets, Toppler Castle is a hidden gem that beautifully blends medieval history, unique architecture, and natural beauty.
Visit Notes
I’m told that it’s possible to visit the inside of this castle with a reservation, but it’s not something I explored. We enjoyed our walk from Rothenburg’s old town down to the castle and back though if you’re pressed for time or have mobility issues, you’d probably be better off skipping this walk. On this walk, you will walk down a pretty steep hill, pass over a covered pedestrian bridge, walk bay a beautiful stream, and see farm animals all around you. If you’d like, you can also extend your walk to see the double bridge.
