The construction of Segovia Cathedral began in the 16th century, following the demolition of the city’s former Romanesque cathedral due to structural problems. The new cathedral was designed to showcase the wealth and power of Segovia, which was a prosperous city during that period. Construction took nearly 80 years, with various architects contributing to its design.
The architectural style of the cathedral is predominantly Gothic, with some Renaissance and Baroque elements. The cathedral’s exterior is characterized by its soaring spires, intricate stone carvings, and detailed ornamentation. The central nave rises to a height of approximately 33 meters (108 feet) and is flanked by two lower side aisles. The entrance façade features three magnificent doors, each adorned with elaborate sculptures depicting scenes from the Bible and various religious figures.
One of the most striking features of the cathedral is its tower, known as the “Dama de las Catedrales” (Lady of the Cathedrals). Standing at around 90 meters (295 feet) tall, it offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside. The Aqueduct of Segovia was constructed during the reign of the Roman Empire, specifically in the 1st century AD, although the exact date is still a matter of debate among historians. It was built to supply the city of Segovia with fresh water from the nearby Sierra de Guadarrama mountains, located approximately 17 kilometers away.
The aqueduct stands as a testament to the remarkable engineering skills of the Romans. The above-ground portion stretches for about 728 meters (2,388 feet) and consists of 165 arches, making it an impressive structure to behold. The aqueduct is primarily built with granite blocks, perfectly fitted together without the use of mortar, a technique known as ashlar construction. The precision and durability of the construction have allowed it to withstand the test of time.
The arches of the aqueduct, known as the “double-tiered” arches, are one of its most distinctive features. The lower level contains 109 arches, while the upper level has 43 arches. These arches form a staggered pattern, providing both strength and aesthetic beauty to the structure. The tallest arch reaches a height of about 28.5 meters (93.5 feet), making it an imposing sight.
The aqueduct originally carried water from the Fuenfría Springs, located near the town of Valsaín, to the city of Segovia. It operated for more than 1,800 years, ensuring a reliable water supply for the city. The water flowed through a channel made of large, hewn-out granite blocks, which were carefully aligned to maintain a constant downward slope and regulate the water flow.
It is recommended to explore the aqueduct from different viewpoints to fully appreciate its size and architectural details. You can admire it up close from below or find a vantage point from higher ground, such as the nearby Plaza Azoguejo, to capture stunning panoramic views.
