Germanisches Nationalmuseum

The Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg is Germany’s largest museum of cultural history, offering an extensive and fascinating journey through over 1,000 years of German-speaking art, culture, and heritage. Housed in a combination of modern and historic buildings, including a former monastery, the museum’s vast collection features everything from medieval armor and Renaissance paintings to scientific instruments, musical instruments, and everyday objects from different periods. Highlights include Albrecht Dürer’s works, the oldest known globe (the Behaim Globe), and the striking collection of medieval sculptures and altarpieces.

The museum also showcases historical clothing, crafts, and manuscripts, giving visitors a rich and immersive look into Germany’s artistic and intellectual achievements. With interactive exhibits and audio guides, the museum is engaging for both history enthusiasts and casual visitors. Whether you’re drawn to fine art, medieval history, or cultural artifacts, the Germanisches Nationalmuseum is an absolute must-visit for anyone wanting to deepen their understanding of Germany’s rich cultural past while exploring Nuremberg.

Visit Notes

This museum is huge, with art from Roman times to modern. There is an old church and monastic residence somewhere in the middle of the museum as well. Oh, did you want to see an armory? They have that too. Statues, paintings, handicrafts, pottery, skeletons, the world’s first globe… There’s a bit of everything here and I loved it. We visited on a chilly, rainy spring day and happily spent about three hours making our way through the exhibits.
