Museo de Arte Africano Arellano Alonso

The Museo de Arte Africano Arellano Alonso, located within the historic Palacio de Santa Cruz in Valladolid, Spain, offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore one of Europe’s most significant collections of Sub-Saharan African art. Established in 2004 through the generous donation of the Jiménez-Arellano Alonso family, the museum is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich artistic heritage of various African cultures.

The museum’s exhibitions are thoughtfully arranged across several halls within the palace:

  • Sala Renacimiento: This hall features an extensive collection of terracotta sculptures, highlighting the artistic traditions of cultures such as the Nok, Ifé, and Benín. Notably, it includes rare representations of mounted figures, which are exceptional in African art due to the historical challenges of horse domestication in certain regions.
  • Sala San Ambrosio: Dedicated to the Kingdom of Oku in northwestern Cameroon, this space displays ceremonial objects, royal regalia, and masks associated with secret societies. These artifacts provide insight into the sociopolitical and spiritual life of the Oku people.
  • Galería de San Ambrosio: An ethnographic gallery showcasing a diverse array of everyday objects from various African cultures, including musical instruments, jewelry, and ritual items.
  • Salón de Rectores: This hall presents a collection of traditional African currencies, illustrating the diverse forms of trade and economic systems across the continent.

The museum offers free admission.
