Its intricate façade, adorned with stunning sculptures and ornate carvings, is a masterpiece that will leave you in awe.
Surrounding the cathedral, you’ll find an array of picturesque buildings and charming alleys that exude a sense of old-world charm. The architecture in the plaza reflects various styles, including Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque, showcasing the evolution of Oviedo’s architectural heritage over the centuries.
The plaza itself is a lively hub, bustling with locals and visitors alike, creating a vibrant and energetic atmosphere. Cafés and restaurants line the perimeter of the square, offering a perfect spot to relax, enjoy a cup of coffee, and soak up the ambiance while admiring the architectural wonders that surround you.
Also in the square is the Escultura de La Regenta. It is a magnificent tribute to the literary character of Ana Ozores, also known as “La Regenta,” who is the protagonist of the famous Spanish novel of the same name, written by Leopoldo Alas “Clarín.”
The sculpture itself is an impressive representation of Ana Ozores, standing tall and dignified in the heart of Oviedo. Created by the renowned Spanish sculptor Eduardo Zaragoza, the sculpture captures the essence of Ana Ozores as described in the novel. It depicts her in a contemplative pose, with a book in her hands, reflecting her profound intellect and deep inner thoughts.
The plaza is also conveniently located near other notable attractions in Oviedo. Just a short walk away, you’ll find the historic University of Oviedo, the charming Old Town with its narrow streets and quaint shops, and the picturesque San Francisco Park.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Vitória
The church dates back to the 18th century and showcases a blend of architectural styles, predominantly Baroque and Neoclassical. The church was badly damaged in the 19th century by both the Siege of Porto (1832-1833) and then again in 1874 during a fare. In the side wall, near the south door, you can still find a bullet lodged in the stone.
The interior of the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Vitória features a nave with high ceilings adorned with beautiful stucco patterns. One of the highlights of this church is its stunning altarpiece. The main altar is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, adorned with gold leaf and intricate woodwork.
As you explore further, you’ll notice other notable features, such as beautiful side chapels, ornate statues, and impressive artwork. The attention to detail in every corner of the church is truly remarkable.
Visit Notes
During my visit, the doors were open but the interior was roped off so I couldn’t do more than walk inside the door. There was a man playing a violin up by the altar and I now believe that every church should have a violinist at all times. It was incredible.
Even though I wasn’t able to explore the church the way I wanted, I really enjoyed walking around the neighborhood nearby. The architecture in Porto is beautiful, abandoned buildings next to exquisitely restored buildings, cobblestone streets, cats running around… You can’t go wrong just strolling through the streets.

Funicular dos Guindais
The funicular is located in the heart of Porto and connects the Ribeira district, situated by the Douro River, with the Batalha district, which is located on a higher elevation. The journey itself is an experience worth having as it provides a scenic and picturesque ride.
As you step inside the funicular, you’ll be greeted with a modern and comfortable cabin. The cabins are designed with large windows that allow you to enjoy panoramic views of Porto’s stunning landscapes. As the funicular ascends or descends, you’ll witness the picturesque architecture, the charming streets, and the vibrant colors that make Porto so enchanting.
The ride on the Funicular dos Guindais is relatively short but memorable. It takes only a few minutes to complete the journey, but those few minutes will leave you with lasting impressions of Porto’s beauty. It is an excellent way to move between the lower and upper parts of the city while avoiding steep hills and long walks.
The funicular also serves as a gateway to some of Porto’s notable attractions. Once you reach the top, you’ll find yourself in the Batalha district, which is home to the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge. This double-deck iron bridge is an architectural masterpiece and offers breathtaking views of the Douro River and the city skyline. From here, you can explore other nearby attractions such as the Sé do Porto (Porto Cathedral) and the historical Rua de Santa Catarina, a bustling shopping street.

Somehow I neglected to take any pictures of the funicular, opting instead for a video. The ride was quick, but wow, those views! It’s worth the ride just to watch the bridge and river falling away from you as you climb.

As you ascend, you’ll be able to witness the stunning architectural beauty of Porto’s historic buildings, including the iconic Ribeira district, where colorful houses line the waterfront. The cable car ride also offers a unique perspective of the famous Dom Luís I Bridge, which connects Porto and Gaia and stands as a symbol of the city.
Once you reach the upper station, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the charming neighborhood of Serra do Pilar. From here, you can take a leisurely stroll through the neighborhood’s narrow streets, soak in the local atmosphere, and enjoy the stunning views from different vantage points.

It offers a unique perspective of both Porto and Gaia, allowing you to appreciate the beauty of these two cities from above.
