Jardim do Morro
Jardim do Morro is a picturesque park located in Porto, Portugal, that offers a delightful retreat from the bustling city life. Situated on the southern bank of the Douro River, directly opposite the historic Ribeira district, this charming garden is a must-visit destination for anyone planning a trip to Porto.
One of the main highlights of Jardim do Morro is its stunning panoramic views. As you enter the park, you’ll be greeted by a vast expanse of greenery dotted with beautiful flowerbeds, towering trees, and well-maintained lawns. However, the real treat awaits you at the viewpoint, where you can enjoy breathtaking vistas of the Douro River, the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge, and the colorful facades of Porto’s old town. This vantage point is especially enchanting during sunrise or sunset, as the warm light casts a magical glow over the landscape.
The garden itself offers plenty of spots to relax and unwind. You can meander along the peaceful pathways, finding a cozy bench or a shady nook to read a book or have a picnic. The serene atmosphere makes it an ideal place for introspection, photography, or simply enjoying the tranquility of nature.
Jardim do Morro also boasts historical significance. The park was designed in the early 20th century by French landscape architect Édouard Redont and is an excellent example of the Art Nouveau style. I suppose if you like crowds then a visit to this viewpoint at sunset is in order. Instead I went in the morning and got to watch a guy feeding pigeons corn from his mouth. I’m happy with my trade-off.
I don’t think this viewpoint warrants a special trip unless you’re intent on joining the masses to view the sunset. The park itself is nothing special and I think there are plenty of other great viewpoints from which to admire the city.

This seems to be a popular stop for tour groups. The few times I stopped by there were large groups of people gathered, so it’s not exactly a place to go to relax. The views are worth stopping by for though.
The neighborhood nearby is the real draw for me. I strolled through it a couple of times and each time found new architectural details to admire.

Bank of Materials
This one is a little obscure, I’ll admit. If you have any interest at all in old, architectural elements, then a stop here is a must. Established in 2010, the Bank of Materials takes examples of repetitive materials (such as tiles, metals, or carved stone) from decaying or demolished buildings and holds them as examples for others to use or replicate. Think of it as a library of antique building materials. The materials they hold can date from as far back as the 15th century.
These materials are provided to building owners to take, free of charge, to fill in areas on their buildings or to reproduce. The bank even teaches restoration techniques, helping to maintain the character and history of this ancient city.
Visit Notes
If you have any interest at all in the little architectural details found throughout Porto, then I recommend a stop here. They have racks and racks of antique tiles to peruse, statues, signs, metalwork, you name it. It’s a fascinating look at Porto’s architectural history.

Jardins do Palácio de Cristal
The Crystal Palace Gardens are named for a palace built on the site in the 19th century. Sadly, the palace is no more and in its place you will find the Rosa Mota pavilion, a strange, dome-shaped building that hosts concerts and events.
As you enter the gardens, you’ll be greeted by a beautiful landscape filled with lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and well-manicured lawns. The park spans over 8 hectares (20 acres) and offers breathtaking views of the Douro River and the city skyline, adding to its charm.
Strolling through the gardens, you’ll discover a wide variety of trees, including exotic species such as camellias, cedars, magnolias, and sequoias. The abundance of flowers creates a colorful tapestry, with blooming roses, azaleas, and rhododendrons adding to the park’s vibrant atmosphere.
For those seeking tranquility, there are several serene ponds scattered throughout the gardens, where you can sit and relax while enjoying the soothing sounds of flowing water. The park also features winding pathways that lead you through hidden corners, offering a sense of exploration and discovery.
If you visit during the spring, you’ll be treated to a spectacular display of colors as the gardens burst to life with vibrant blossoms. However, the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal is enchanting throughout the year, with each season offering its own unique charm and beauty.

During my visit, there was a book fair happening. There were food trucks, ice cream, kids playing, and an overall lively atmosphere. Despite this, there were still plenty of quiet places to be found to sit and relax. It was a warm day and the park provided numerous shady benches on which to sit and eat the ice cream mentioned earlier.
I particularly enjoyed the roosters that were strutting around. The peacocks I expected… the roosters were a lovely surprise.

Parque das Virtudes offers several viewpoints where you can marvel at panoramic vistas of Porto. From here, you can admire the iconic Ribeira district, the impressive Dom Luís I Bridge, and the sparkling river below. I didn’t spend a ton of time here as there were flocks of teenagers hanging around during my visit. They were occupying all the shady areas and it was hot out. I do think it would have been a lovely spot to rest later in the day though, especially if you happened to have an ice cream in your hands. If you’re in the area, it’s worth stopping by for a look around.
