The Miradouro de Santa Luzia is one of Lisbon’s most picturesque viewpoints, offering breathtaking views over the Alfama district and the Tagus River. Located near the São Jorge Castle, this scenic terrace is a must-visit spot for anyone wanting to take in the charm of Lisbon’s historic center.
What makes this miradouro truly special is its romantic atmosphere, enhanced by lush bougainvillea-covered pergolas, traditional azulejo (blue and white tile) panels, and beautifully landscaped gardens. The tiles depict historical scenes, including the Christian conquest of Lisbon, adding a touch of history to the serene setting.
From here, you can admire the red rooftops of Alfama, the domes of São Vicente de Fora and the National Pantheon, and the shimmering waters of the Tagus. It’s a favorite spot for both tourists and locals to relax, take photos, and soak in the city’s beauty. Sunset is an especially magical time to visit, as the golden light creates a truly unforgettable view. Whether you’re on a leisurely walk through Alfama or seeking a peaceful place to appreciate Lisbon’s charm, Miradouro de Santa Luzia is not to be missed!

There are many viewpoints throughout Lisbon, and I consider all of them worth visiting. Whenever possible, you should bring along a snack or your preferred drink so you can sit for a bit and enjoy the view. Unless you have an unlimited amount of time in Lisbon, I recommend visiting the viewpoints that you happen to be near rather than going out of your way to visit any viewpoint in particular. I don’t think Lisbon has a single bad angle.

The garden is divided into different sections, each with its own distinct climate and plant life. These sections include the cold greenhouse, the sweet greenhouse, and the hot greenhouse.
As you enter the garden, you’ll be greeted by a stunning display of lush greenery and colorful flowers. The cold greenhouse is the first section you’ll encounter, and it features a variety of plants that thrive in cooler temperatures. You’ll find ferns, mosses, and other shade-loving plants creating a serene and enchanting atmosphere.
Moving further into the garden, you’ll enter the sweet greenhouse. Here, the climate is slightly warmer, and you’ll be surrounded by a delightful mix of tropical plants, such as orchids, bromeliads, and begonias. The air is filled with exotic fragrances, and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a tropical paradise.
Finally, the hot greenhouse awaits you with its dramatic transformation. As you enter, you’ll be enveloped by the heat and humidity, reminiscent of a tropical rainforest. This section is home to a wide range of towering palm trees, large-leaved plants, and vibrant blooms that thrive in the warmth. It’s a truly immersive experience that will transport you to a different world.
In addition to the three main greenhouses, the Estufa Fria also boasts outdoor gardens, ponds, and even a small lake, adding to the overall charm and diversity of the place. You can take leisurely walks along the winding paths, enjoying the beauty of nature and taking in the peaceful ambiance.
Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a botany lover, or simply seeking a serene and beautiful escape, the Estufa Fria is an ideal destination. It offers a unique opportunity to explore different climates and ecosystems within a single location, making it a truly remarkable and memorable experience.

The Estufa Fria was one of my favorite places in Lisbon. I didn’t see a single other person while I was there and it was a peaceful place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city for a bit. There are benches spread out through the gardens, giving you a place to rest your feet (which will hurt from walking on cobblestones all day). I may have taken a few hundred pictures of the very interesting flowers and plants I found in the gardens while my travel companion rested on a bench. This garden is high on my list of places to re-visit when I return to Lisbon.

Situated on a hill overlooking the city, Edward VII Park boasts stunning panoramic views of Lisbon’s skyline, the Tagus River, and even glimpses of the distant São Jorge Castle. As you enter the park, you’ll be greeted by a grand entrance with beautifully landscaped gardens, elegant fountains, and meticulously maintained flowerbeds.
The park spans over 26 hectares, making it the largest park in central Lisbon. It’s named after Edward VII, the King of the United Kingdom, who visited Lisbon in 1903 to strengthen the diplomatic ties between Portugal and Britain. The park was later named in his honor.
One of the park’s most notable features is its extensive tree-lined avenues, providing ample shade and a refreshing atmosphere. These avenues are perfect for leisurely strolls, jogging, or simply sitting on one of the many benches to relax and take in the serene surroundings.
If you’re a nature enthusiast, you’ll be delighted by the park’s diverse flora. Edward VII Park is renowned for its vibrant and well-maintained gardens, including a variety of exotic plants, colorful flower displays, and neatly manicured lawns. The park is particularly lovely during the spring and early summer when many flowers are in full bloom, creating a visually stunning tapestry of colors.
At the heart of the park, you’ll find the Eduardo VII Greenhouse, a striking iron-framed structure that houses a beautiful collection of tropical and subtropical plants. It’s a haven for botany enthusiasts and offers a peaceful escape from the outside world.
The park also provides recreational activities for visitors of all ages. There’s a large playground for children, where they can enjoy swings, slides, and other fun attractions. For fitness enthusiasts, there are designated jogging and cycling paths that wind through the park, allowing you to enjoy exercise while being surrounded by nature.
Lastly, Edward VII Park serves as a venue for various cultural events and festivals throughout the year. From open-air concerts to art exhibitions, there’s always something happening within its boundaries. Keep an eye out for local events during your visit, as they can add an extra layer of vibrancy to your experience.

The park is quite long and, in my opinion, best visited early in the day before your feet start to hurt from all the walking. We walked up the park on the northeast side and back down the southwest side stopping at ponds and playgrounds (we even did some of the calisthenics that were signposted). At the top of the park there is a little square where a few vendors were set up. The park is a lovely green space with many benches and places to sit and reflect on the city (or just rest your tired feet). Inside the boundaries of Parque Eduardo VII you will also find the Estufa Fria, a cold greenhouse. I highly recommend a visit inside the greenhouse if you’re seeking even more solitude and quiet time.
