    Joanina Library

    Joanina Library, Coimbra

The Joanina Library in Coimbra is a magnificent Baroque library located within the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest universities in Europe, founded in 1290. Built between 1717 and 1728 during the reign of King Joรฃo V, itโ€™s considered one of the most beautiful and lavish libraries in the world.

The library’s interior is a feast for the eyes, featuring three grand rooms adorned with exquisite gilded woodwork, intricate frescoed ceilings, and elaborate decorative motifs. Its polished exotic wood shelves are filled with over 60,000 leather-bound volumes, primarily from the 16th to 18th centuries, covering topics like medicine, law, theology, and philosophy.

An interesting and quirky feature of the library is its resident colony of bats, which help preserve the valuable books by eating insects that could damage them. Because of this, silk covers are draped over the tables at night to protect them from bat droppings.

Visiting the Joanina Library is like stepping back in time to an era of scholarly grandeur. It’s located near the Royal Palace and the Universityโ€™s Tower, making it a perfect stop on a tour of Coimbraโ€™s historic hilltop campus. The library is usually included in the Universityโ€™s general ticket, which provides access to several notable sites. Itโ€™s a must-see for anyone fascinated by history, architecture, or simply seeking an unforgettable, almost magical experience.

    Visit Notes

The library can be visited with a timed ticket. It’s a very impressive space that is worth the visit, even if you can’t take pictures. You are given a specific amount of time in each space and there are information sheets in multiple languages which you can read for more information.

Don’t let the pictures below fool you, those are just the initial library floor, the only place you’re allowed to take photos. The Noble Floor of the library is gorgeous. See the official website for pictures of that area.

Photography is prohibited on the Joanina Library Noble Floor

    Manga Cloister

    Manga Cloister, Coimbra

This charming small garden was once a cloister of the Santa Cruz Monastery. Today it is little more than a fountain with some steps where you can rest your weary feet. While it may be small, it’s still a lovely spot to stop and take a few pictures.

If you happen to speak Portuguese, this video will give you some more information as well as a good visual representation of the garden.

    Igreja de Sรฃo Tiago

    Igreja de Sรฃo Tiago, Coimbra

The Igreja de Sรฃo Tiago in Coimbra is a charming Romanesque church located in the heart of the cityโ€™s historic center, right on the bustling Praรงa do Comรฉrcio. Dating back to the 12th century, it was built as a stop along the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, and its architecture reflects the simplicity and elegance typical of Romanesque style.

The faรงade is relatively simple but features a beautifully carved portal with intricate capitals and archivolts, showcasing motifs that blend religious symbolism with natural elements. Inside, the church has a single nave with a modest but serene atmosphere, enhanced by thick stone walls and soft natural light filtering through small windows.

One of the highlights is the wooden altarpiece from the 16th century, richly decorated with gilded elements and vibrant paintings depicting religious scenes. Despite its modest size, the church has a sense of history and spirituality that resonates with visitors.

The Igreja de Sรฃo Tiago is a great stop for anyone interested in medieval architecture, religious history, or simply seeking a quiet and atmospheric place in the midst of Coimbraโ€™s lively downtown. Itโ€™s also an excellent starting point for exploring the nearby shops, cafรฉs, and other historical sites.

    Visit Notes

As far as I can tell, this church is rarely open for visits. The outside is quick to visit and there’s the added bonus of the cats that seem to live in a cat house out front.
