Antigua Muralla de León
The Antigua Muralla de León, or Ancient Wall of León, is a remarkable testament to the city’s extensive history, offering visitors a tangible connection to its Roman and medieval past.
Constructed initially in the 1st century CE by the Roman Legio VII Gemina, the original stone walls were designed to fortify the military camp established in the area. These early defenses were later reinforced between the 3rd and 4th centuries, resulting in a more robust structure approximately 5 meters thick and 8 meters high, complete with semicircular towers at regular intervals.
During the medieval period, the walls underwent further modifications to adapt to the evolving defensive needs of the city. These enhancements included the addition of new sections and the reinforcement of existing structures, reflecting León’s growing significance during the Middle Ages.
Today, several well-preserved sections of the ancient walls are integrated into León’s urban landscape, allowing visitors to explore and appreciate these historical fortifications firsthand. Notable areas to visit include:

Plaza de San Marcelo
Plaza de San Marcelo, situated in the heart of León, Spain, serves as a vibrant junction between the city’s historic Old Quarter and its modern expansions. At the center of the plaza, you’ll find a charming neoclassical fountain dating back to 1786, surrounded by a small garden. Nearby, a large bronze model crafted by Juan Carlos Ponga illustrates León’s urban evolution from Roman times to the present, providing insightful context to the city’s rich history.
Dominating the square is the Palacio de los Guzmanes, a 16th-century Renaissance palace designed by architect Enrique Gil de Hontañón.
