The Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis in Porto is a prestigious art museum housed in the beautiful Palรกcio das Carrancas, an elegant 18th-century neoclassical building. Established in 1833, it is Portugalโs first public art museum and is named after Antรณnio Soares dos Reis, a celebrated Portuguese sculptor.
The museum’s collections are rich and diverse, showcasing Portuguese art from the 16th to the 20th centuries, with a particular emphasis on 19th-century painting and sculpture. Visitors can admire works by Soares dos Reis himself, including his famous marble sculpture โO Desterradoโ (The Exiled), which captures intense emotion and exquisite detail. Alongside sculptures, the museum exhibits paintings, ceramics, textiles, furniture, jewelry, and glassware, offering a comprehensive view of Portugalโs artistic heritage.
The museum’s galleries are thoughtfully arranged to highlight different artistic periods and styles, making it easy for visitors to follow the evolution of Portuguese art. Additionally, the peaceful garden and courtyard offer a pleasant space to relax and reflect on the art youโve seen.
For anyone interested in art, history, or Portuguese culture, the Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis provides an inspiring and educational experience. Its impressive collection and beautifully restored building make it a must-visit cultural institution in Porto.
Visit Notes
The museum is near the Jardins do Palรกcio deย Cristal so I grouped the two sights together. I enjoyed the museum. Was it the world’s best art museum? No, but it was an enjoyable way to get out of the heat in the afternoon and absorb some culture.

Visit Notes
I stayed directly across the street from the market and found a reason to visit every day. The chocolate stall vendor and the empanada vendor got to know me well. It was fun to walk through here on my way to and from the apartment and check out all the different foods and flowers. If you’re looking for some canned fish to bring home as a souvenir, this is the place to look, you’ll be spoiled for choice. I highly recommend getting some lunch here at least one day during your visit.

Ribeira

Ribeira is one of Portoโs most charming and picturesque neighborhoods, nestled along the banks of the Douro River. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ribeira is known for its colorful, tightly-packed houses, medieval streets, and vibrant atmosphere that makes it feel like stepping into a painting. The areaโs architecture reflects centuries of history, with Baroque, Gothic, and Romanesque influences evident throughout.
As you wander the narrow, winding alleys, youโll encounter lively squares, bustling cafes, and traditional restaurants serving Portuguese specialties like bacalhau and Francesinha. The Ribeira Square (Praรงa da Ribeira) is a particularly popular spot, buzzing with energy and offering outdoor seating with beautiful river views.
One of the highlights of Ribeira is the stunning view of the Dom Luรญs I Bridge, an iron masterpiece designed by a disciple of Gustave Eiffel, which gracefully spans the Douro River and connects Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia. Strolling along the waterfront promenade, youโll see boats once used for transporting port wine, now repurposed for scenic river cruises.
Ribeira truly comes alive at night, with its illuminated buildings reflecting off the river and music pouring out from bars and restaurants. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of Port wine while watching the sunset over the city. Whether youโre interested in history, architecture, food, or simply soaking in Portoโs vibrant culture, Ribeira offers an unforgettable experience.
Visit Notes
I loved strolling along the riverfront in the morning and then climbing all the little alleys the climb up toward the cathedral. It’s easy to get lost in there, and that’s okay. Just explore and see where your feet take you.

Jardim Botรขnico da Ajuda

The Jardim Botรขnico da Ajuda in Lisbon is a beautiful and serene botanical garden located near the Palรกcio Nacional da Ajuda. Established in 1768, it is the oldest botanical garden in Portugal, created under the direction of the Italian botanist Domingos Vandelli during the reign of King Josรฉ I. Originally designed as a teaching garden for the Ajuda Royal Palace, it was intended to house a wide variety of plant species from across the Portuguese Empire.
The garden spans approximately 3.5 hectares and is arranged in a classical, terraced style with two distinct levels. The upper terrace offers stunning panoramic views of the Tagus River and the 25th of April Bridge, making it a popular spot for photography and relaxation. From there, visitors can also enjoy the sight of fountains, statues, and manicured parterres that reflect its elegant, 18th-century design.
The lower terrace is home to an impressive variety of exotic plants, trees, and flowers, including many species collected during Portugal’s explorations abroad. Highlights include magnolias, cacti, succulents, medicinal herbs, and rare tropical plants. Additionally, the garden boasts a remarkable dragon tree (Dracaena draco), which is over 400 years old and one of the oldest of its kind in Europe.
As you wander through the tranquil pathways, youโll find beautiful ornamental ponds, shaded groves, and meticulously landscaped flowerbeds. Itโs a fantastic place for anyone interested in botany, history, or simply enjoying a peaceful, green oasis away from the bustling city.
The Jardim Botรขnico da Ajuda is open year-round and offers a lovely break from sightseeing, particularly on a sunny day. Itโs also a wonderful spot to visit in combination with the nearby Palรกcio Nacional da Ajuda and the Museu do Tesouro Real.
Visit Notes
If you’re in the area to see the Palรกcio Nacional da Ajuda (and you should be!) you shouldn’t miss this garden. It’s a peaceful place to explore and visit with the peacocks. We were here on a hot day and there were plenty of shady spots to relax and drink in the views.
