As you explore its remains, you’ll be awed by the intricately designed walls, towers, and gatehouses. The castle’s layout includes a large courtyard, numerous chambers, and a network of corridors that will transport you back in time.

    Visit Notes

I’m going to be real honest with you, I thought the castle was beautiful, but I hated our visit.

Driving into town and parking was a fiasco. There are several lots to choose from, all of them were basically full when we got there. They wedged us into a small corner of a lot and took our money. Then we walked to the castle gate. The entire walkway up to the castle was lined with stalls selling cheap plastic crap made in china. There were children running every which way and it was difficult to walk through this area.

Keep in mind when you come here, there are other little amusement parks surrounding the castle, so if you have kids, this is a good place to bring them for some fun. If you don’t have kids and just want to visit a castle that feels “authentic”, this is not the place for you.

When we got to the ticket office, it was chaos. It’s like no one there has ever heard of a line. We were being shoved and banged into repeatedly. You eventually enter a door into the tiny ticket office. Once you have your ticket, the people by the door don’t seem to understand they have to let you out the door.

I don’t know, maybe I was just in a bad mood on this day, but the entire experience to this point made me want to pull my hair out. I felt like I was in a terrible amusement park. All I could think was that there were plenty of other places I’d rather be, but we’d already driven all the way out there, so we soldiered on.

Once you get into the castle grounds, things get a little better. Yes, the castle itself was crowded, but people were pretty orderly about it. There are towers and walls to climb and you just have to wait your turn as you would at any major tourist attraction.

The castle is very nice, and if it weren’t for the carnival atmosphere I would highly recommend it. If you have a high tolerance for rabid crowds of people and children, then it’s totally worth it. If you’d rather avoid the crowds, then avoid this castle. Perhaps if you make this your first stop of the day, it won’t be so bad.

    Visit Notes

When you visit here, make sure you have some cash with you. We parked in a parking lot off of DK46. They have some very nice toilets by the parking lot, but they charge a small fee to use. Then when you get nearer the castle ruins a very unofficial person will request money to enter the grounds. Once inside the fence, if you want to climb the tower it will cost you a few more złoty. All of this is cash only, so be prepared.

The castle and grounds are gorgeous. It does require a little hiking uphill, but nothing too crazy. You may see a flock of sheep roaming around. We got to see a newly born lamb learning to run around.

Near the parking lot off DK46, there is a restaurant (Restauracja Spichlerz) that looks quite nice and has excellent views of the castle. For some reason, they didn’t have any pierogi on the day we visited, so we opted to go into town to find some food. In town, there is a large paid parking lot (Zamkowa 1, 42-256 Olsztyn, Poland) where you can leave your car and wander around. There were (and I’m not exaggerating) SEVEN stalls selling ice cream in one small area, so if you like ice cream, they have you covered. You can also get to the castle from this parking lot, rather than parking where we did. If you plan on visiting the town and the castle, this is the better option.

As you approach the Cathedral, you’ll be immediately struck by its imposing presence. The façade of the Cathedral is a magnificent example of Gothic design, characterized by intricate stone carvings, pointed arches, and soaring spires that reach towards the heavens. The cathedral’s exterior is made primarily of brick, giving it a warm, reddish-brown hue, and it features ornate sculptures and statues depicting biblical figures and scenes.

Check out this site for very detailed information on the architecture and history of the cathedral

    Visit Notes

We visited this cathedral during a scooter tour of the city (which I highly recommend). I’m told that much of the original character of the church was destroyed over the years from the usual fires and such, but WWII was the latest and most damaging incident. You can feel that from the lack of detail on the ceilings. However, the rest of the church still has a suitably dark, Gothic feel, and the stained glass is lovely.

    Visit Notes

If there’s one place in Wrocław that you shouldn’t miss, it’s this.

It is impossible to overstate how beautiful the Aula Leopoldina and Oratorium Marianum are. You could easily spend a couple of hours in just these rooms, exploring all the details painted onto the ceiling and walls.

The Mathematical Tower has several exhibits to enjoy as you climb to the tower observation point. The stairs here are “normal” (not tiny medieval, winding stairs) so they are easy to climb and the tower isn’t that high. The views from the tower are quite lovely.
