The church’s exterior is a stunning example of Gothic architecture, characterized by its towering spires and stone carvings. The prominent spire rise dramatically into the Wrocław skyline, making it a recognizable landmark from a distance.
The interior is designed in the traditional Gothic style, featuring high, vaulted ceilings, pointed arches, and an abundance of stained glass windows that cast a warm and colorful glow throughout the space. The stained glass windows depict various religious scenes and add to the ethereal atmosphere within.
The church’s main altar is a true masterpiece, featuring intricate woodcarvings, statues of saints, and a magnificent crucifixion scene as its centerpiece. The altar is surrounded by ornate decorations and provides a focal point for worship and reflection.

While we were visiting, someone decided to practice playing the organ, which really added to the ambiance of this gorgeous church. There are plenty of little details to keep you busy, or you can quickly walk through, depending on your preferences.

Architectural Beauty: The square is surrounded by picturesque and beautifully preserved medieval and Renaissance buildings. The architecture is a blend of styles, including Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau. Each building has its unique charm and character, making it a paradise for architecture enthusiasts.
Market Stalls: While Rynek may no longer serve as a traditional market, you can still find vendors selling various goods. On certain days, you can explore local handicrafts, souvenirs, and delicious Polish street food.
Restaurants and Cafés: The square is brimming with restaurants and cafes offering traditional Polish cuisine, international dishes, and a variety of beverages. It’s a fantastic place to savor pierogi, kielbasa, and other Polish delights while people-watching.
Historic Landmarks: Within the Rynek, you’ll find several significant landmarks, including the Gothic Old Town Hall (Ratusz), which houses a museum. The Market Square also serves as a starting point for guided walking tours of the city.

Hansel and Gretel Houses
(AKA Jaś i Małgosia)
This pair of homes on the corner of Odrzańska and Świętego Mikołaja, just off the Rynek, are known as the ‘Hansel & Gretel’ houses. Built in the 16th and 18th century they once marked the entrance to the church cemetery, hence the inscription in Latin on the Baroque archway, ‘Death is the gate to life.’

This is a quick stop to snap a couple of pictures and discover the gnomes lurking nearby. If you’re visiting in the summer, you may find an outdoor cafe set up where you can get a drink.

Take some time here to appreciate all the little details on the exterior of this architectural gem. I found the building to be especially beautiful and found it difficult to tear myself away. Eventually I did because we were on our way to get some chocolate. Chocolate always wins.
Inside the Old Town Hall you will find the City Museum of Wrocław and the Museum of Bourgeois Art.

The Pillory (Wrocław)

The Pillory is a symbol of Wrocław’s rich history. Wrocław, which has a complex history of Polish, German, and Czech influences, was once part of the Kingdom of Bohemia and later the Kingdom of Prussia. The Pillory is a reminder of the city’s medieval past when it was an important trading hub in Central Europe.
The Pillory is located in the heart of Wrocław’s Old Town, specifically in the Market Square (Rynek). The Market Square is the largest medieval square in Europe and is surrounded by colorful, historic buildings that make it a captivating destination in itself.
The Pillory is a tall, stone column topped with a decorative iron structure. Historically, it was used for the public humiliation and punishment of wrongdoers, who would be chained or restrained here for public display and scorn.
When you visit the Pillory, you’ll also be surrounded by other notable attractions in Wrocław’s Old Town. These include the Gothic-style Town Hall, which is a stunning architectural masterpiece, as well as numerous cafes, restaurants, and shops where you can enjoy local cuisine and shop for souvenirs.
The Market Square is a vibrant and lively place, often hosting various events, street performances, and markets. It’s a great spot to soak in the city’s atmosphere, watch the world go by, and take in the beautiful architecture that surrounds the Pillory.

The Pillory sits in front of the Town Hall in Wrocław’s Rynek. Since you’ll probably be in the vicinity, it’s worth stopping to take a look. When we visited there were market stalls blocking much of this area until the very last morning, so I managed to finally sneak a picture. I didn’t get all the photos I wanted, but I did get to shop, so that works out.
