The sky is not completely dark at night. Were the sky absolutely dark, one would not be able to see the silhouette of an object against the sky.

    Sรฉ do Porto

    Sรฉ do Porto

As you approach the cathedral, you’ll immediately notice its commanding presence and stunning architectural style. Originally built in the 12th century, Sรฉ do Porto (Porto Cathedral) is a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture, adorned with Gothic and Baroque elements added over the centuries. The exterior features intricately carved facades, imposing towers, and a grand rose window that catches the eye.

The interior of the cathedral is equally breathtaking, with high vaulted ceilings, ornate chapels, and beautiful stained glass windows that allow colorful light to filter through. Take a moment to admire the intricate details of the altarpieces, sculptures, and religious artifacts that showcase the craftsmanship of the time.

One of the notable highlights of Sรฉ do Porto is the Silver Altar, an exquisite masterpiece made of silver and gold that dates back to the 17th century. It is a true testament to the city’s historical and cultural heritage. Another remarkable feature is the Cloister, a peaceful courtyard adorned with azulejo tiles, which provides a tranquil escape from the bustling streets outside.

After exploring the interior, make sure to ascend to the terrace of the cathedral. From here, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Porto’s old town, the Douro River, and the charming red rooftops that characterize the cityscape. It’s a perfect spot to capture memorable photos or simply soak in the enchanting atmosphere.

Keep in mind that as a popular tourist destination, Sรฉ do Porto can get crowded, especially during peak times. It is advisable to arrive early to fully appreciate the tranquility of the place and avoid the crowds. Also, remember to dress respectfully as it is a religious site.

    Visit Notes

There was more to see at the cathedral than I thought. Between the cathedral itself, the cloister, the tower rooms, and the other chapels, it took some time to get through it all. I got a combo ticket for the Cathedral and the Episcopal Palace next door and thought it was worth it. I would rate the Cathedral a must-see and the Episcopal Palace as something you should only see if you have enough time.

The park is beautifully landscaped, with neatly trimmed hedges and manicured lawns creating a peaceful ambiance. It’s an ideal place to relax, take a leisurely stroll, or have a picnic on a sunny day. You will also find a number of meaningful statues.

One of the highlights of the Jardim da Cordoaria is the striking statue known as “Thirteen Laughing at Each Other.” Created by the talented Spanish sculptor Juan Muรฑoz, this intriguing artwork is actually four bronze and steel benches scattered throughout the park. The thirteen individual figures are depicted in various states of laughter, engaged in playful interaction. Each figure has a distinct expression and posture, conveying a sense of joy, mirth, and camaraderie. The sculpture’s whimsical design and the liveliness of the laughing figures make it a captivating sight to behold.

Another highlight of the park are its variety of trees. They have rare varieties like sequoias and a row of giant sycamores with interesting, bulbous trunks that remind me a bit of elephant feet.

    Visit Notes

Unfortunately, the park was barricaded off for some sort of renovation work during my visit. I was able to get a look at the “laughing” statue, but everything else was behind a fence.

    Livraria Lello

    Lisbon Military Museum

Situated in the heart of Porto, Livraria Lello is housed in a magnificent Art Nouveau building. Its exterior is adorned with an ornate facade featuring intricate carvings and stained glass windows, giving you a taste of the beauty that awaits inside. The moment you step through the doors, you are greeted by a breathtaking interior.

The main attraction of Livraria Lello is its exquisite spiral staircase, which is considered an architectural masterpiece. Crafted in stunning red wood, the staircase winds its way up to the upper levels of the bookstore, creating a sense of wonder and awe as you ascend. The intricate details and craftsmanship of the staircase are truly remarkable and make for a perfect photo opportunity.

Once you’ve marveled at the staircase, you’ll find yourself surrounded by shelves upon shelves of books, creating a cozy and immersive atmosphere. Livraria Lello is known for its extensive collection of books, ranging from classic literature to contemporary works, catering to a variety of interests and tastes. You can easily spend hours browsing through the carefully curated selection, discovering hidden gems or revisiting beloved titles.

Aside from its architectural and literary delights, Livraria Lello has a rich history. It has been a gathering place for intellectuals, writers, and artists since its establishment in 1906.

It’s important to note that due to its popularity, Livraria Lello can get quite busy, especially during peak tourist seasons. To ensure a pleasant visit, it’s advisable to arrive early in the day or consider purchasing a ticket in advance, as they have implemented a ticketing system to manage the flow of visitors.

    Visit Notes

I walked by the bookstore at various times every day during my stay and every day there was a mob of people standing in the sun, waiting for entry. There’s almost nothing I love more than bookstores and I would have loved nothing more than to go inside… if it weren’t for the crowds. I don’t really want to go into a store with hundreds of other people all pushing to get the same picture. No thank you. If this is something you want to do, get your ticket online in advance. This doesn’t save you from the crowds, but maybe your wait in the sun will be shorter.

By the way, this library has nothing to do with J.K. Rowling or Harry Potter. She has gone on record that she did not know about the existence of Livraria Lello. Harry Potter was not inspired by this bookstore.
