    Palรกcio da Bolsa

    Palรกcio da Bolsa, Porto

Bolsa Palace was built in the 19th century and was originally intended to serve as the city’s stock exchange. However, today it functions as a prominent cultural and tourist destination. As you approach the building, you’ll be captivated by its impressive Neoclassical facade, which showcases a harmonious blend of architectural styles.

Upon entering the palace, you’ll be greeted by a grand entrance hall that exudes elegance and opulence. The interior of Bolsa Palace is a true visual feast, featuring intricate details, lavish decorations, and remarkable craftsmanship. One of the most breathtaking spaces within the palace is the Arab Room (Sala รrabe), which is adorned with stunning Moorish-inspired designs, including intricate plasterwork, geometric patterns, and vibrant tilework.

As you explore further, you’ll come across other magnificent rooms such as the Golden Room (Sala Dourada), characterized by its lavish gilded decorations, beautiful frescoes, and ornate chandeliers. The Pรกtio das Naรงรตes (Nations’ Courtyard) is another highlight, boasting an impressive glass and iron dome that bathes the area in natural light.

The tour of Bolsa Palace often includes a visit to the historical courtroom, where the city’s merchants once gathered to conduct business. This room is adorned with portraits of past presidents and governors, and it reflects the importance of Porto as a commercial hub in its heyday.

In addition to the architectural wonders, the palace also offers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of Porto. Knowledgeable guides will share fascinating stories and anecdotes about the building’s past, allowing you to immerse yourself in the city’s heritage.

Outside the palace, you’ll find the picturesque Infante Dom Henrique Square, which provides a tranquil setting to relax and soak in the atmosphere. From here, you can also enjoy breathtaking views of the Douro River and the iconic Dom Luรญs I Bridge, adding to the allure of your visit.

    Visit Notes

I highly recommend a visit to Bolsa Palace. To see the interior you need to join a tour. The first thing to note is that there were many more tour times offered at the ticket office than were listed on their website. I found the website to be fairly useless honestly, maybe they’ll update it at some point. I was easily able to get a ticket for the next available tour time.

My tour guide was energetic and frankly, hilarious. It was one of the best tours I’ve been on in a while. The palace itself is incredible. The Arab Room is obviously the star, but the other rooms don’t suffer by comparison.

Igreja e Museu de Sรฃo Francisco do Porto

Igreja e Museu de Sรฃo Francisco do Porto

The Igreja e Museu de Sรฃo Francisco (Church and Museum of Sรฃo Francisco) in Porto, Portugal, is a remarkable historical and architectural gem that is definitely worth a visit. Located in the heart of Porto’s historic center, this complex consists of a church and an attached museum, both of which hold significant cultural and artistic importance.

The church itself dates back to the 14th century and is a fine example of Gothic architecture. As you approach the exterior, you’ll be captivated by the intricate stone carvings that adorn the faรงade, depicting religious scenes and figures. The grand entrance door welcomes you into a world of awe-inspiring beauty and rich religious heritage.

Once inside, you’ll be struck by the church’s remarkable interior. The highlight of the visit is undoubtedly the stunning Baroque decoration that dominates the space. The ornate golden altarpiece, sculpted wooden screens, and intricate woodwork create a mesmerizing visual spectacle. The sheer opulence and attention to detail in the church’s design are truly breathtaking.

However, what makes the Igreja e Museu de Sรฃo Francisco truly unique is the adjoining museum. The museum is housed in the former cloisters of the Franciscan monastery, and it showcases an impressive collection of religious art and artifacts. Here, you can explore a diverse range of exhibits that provide insights into the history, culture, and religious practices of the region.

Don’t forget to visit the catacombs while you’re here. Beneath the church you’ll find the remains of members of the Franciscan order. Under a pane of glass you’ll also be able to view the ossuary.

    Visit Notes

You know what’s annoying? When you’re trying to appreciate an incredibly gorgeous church and the guard has to keep yelling at people not to take pictures. Pictures are not allowed in the church. I know it sucks, but please, for the love of all that is holy, just refrain from taking pictures in the church.

Anyway, this place is amazing and you should visit. The church is absolutely dripping in gold. It’s jaw-dropping. I’d show you pictures, but I followed the rules, so check out the website. You can take pictures in the museum portion and the crypt. We spent a good amount of time here, probably close to an hour and half. It was worth it.

The square is surrounded by colorful buildings that showcase the traditional Portuguese architectural style with their tiled facades and wrought-iron balconies. The narrow, cobbled streets add to the old-world ambiance, evoking a sense of stepping back in time.

    Visit Notes

Since I’m allergic to crowds, I visited in the morning and enjoyed the solitude. I communed with a cute kitty and took my fill of pictures. If you’re the type of person who wants to sit at a cafe and people watch, then come at lunch or dinner to enjoy the bustle of a busy European square.

    Ponte de Dom Luรญs I

Ponte de Dom Luรญs I, Porto

Designed by the renowned German engineer Thรฉophile Seyrig, who was a student of Gustave Eiffel, the bridge was completed in 1886. Its construction is a testament to the industrial revolution era and showcases the innovative use of iron and steel in bridge engineering.

The Ponte de Dom Luรญs I is a double-deck, metal arch bridge that spans the Douro River with grandeur and elegance. It measures approximately 385 meters (1,263 feet) in length, and its most distinctive feature is its two levels. The top level serves as a roadway for vehicles and pedestrians, while the lower level is reserved for the Porto Metro, providing a convenient means of transportation across the river.

As you approach the bridge, you’ll be captivated by its intricate lattice ironwork, which gives it a unique and intricate appearance. From a distance, the Ponte de Dom Luรญs I stands tall and majestic, offering a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape and the river below.

Walking across the top level of the bridge is a must-do experience for any visitor to Porto. As you stroll along, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the historic Ribeira district, with its colorful buildings cascading down the hillside and the boats gracefully gliding along the Douro River. It’s a scene that truly embodies the charm and beauty of Porto.

Once you reach the other side of the bridge, you’ll find yourself in Vila Nova de Gaia, a neighborhood famous for its wine cellars and the production of Port wine. Take the opportunity to explore the area, visit some of the renowned wineries, and indulge in a tasting of Portugal’s famous fortified wine.

    Visit Notes

This bridge is beautiful and impressive from every angle. I’ll be honest though, I’ve always been a little scared of bridges. For some reason that fear is only growing. I decided to walk across the top level of the bridge and it took every ounce of willpower to not sprint across as quickly as possible, screaming and pushing people out of my way. I felt like I might vomit. For those people who, like me, don’t like heights, be aware that you can see through the floor of the bridge where the tram tracks are. It’s a little unnerving.

Once I got to the other side I was debating how to get back because there was no way I was going to walk over it again. Ultimately, I walked across from the bottom level and that was much better.

    Igreja de Santa Clara

    Igreja de Santa Clara, Porto

The Igreja de Santa Clara is a magnificent church dedicated to Saint Clare of Assisi, an Italian saint and one of the first followers of Saint Francis of Assisi. Built in the 15th century, the Igreja de Santa Clara is an excellent example of Gothic architecture, with its grand faรงade and intricate details.

You approach the church through a doorway into a courtyard. You’ll notice its imposing stone exterior. An ornate, Baroque portal was later added around the door. The combination of Gothic elements and Baroque influences creates a visually stunning sight.

Upon entering, you’ll be greeted by an opulent and awe-inspiring interior. The high vaulted ceilings are covered in frescoes and gilt in gold. Nearly every surface of the walls are bedecked with elaborately carved, gilded woodwork. If you like gold cherubs, this is the church for you. The entire church is bathed in light from the large clerestory windows.

One of the notable features of the Igreja de Santa Clara is its impressive altarpiece. The intricate gilded woodwork and delicate sculptures create a focal point that is both artistically and spiritually significant. It is a masterpiece of Baroque artistry, showcasing the craftsmanship of the period.

    Visit Notes

This is my favorite place in Porto. You could probably visit every day for a year and each time you would find something new to admire. While I was taking about 5,000 pictures, an employee came over and talked to me about the history of the church and its restoration. He told me about something I had never considered before when it comes to church restoration… termites. I guess they had done serious damage to some of the carvings and the only thing holding them together was the gold in which they were covered.

I loved this place, and I would live here if I could. You must go and see it for yourself.
