Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore

San Zeno Maggiore is one of those churches that feels both cozy and monumental at once — like a wise old friend who still turns heads. Sitting a little west of Verona’s historic center, its squat, harmonious Romanesque façade with the big bronze doors and the patterned arcades gives you a gentle, reassuring first impression. The bell tower peeks above the roofs, and inside the church the thick columns and rounded arches create a calm, almost meditative space that’s easy to lose yourself in.

The real showstoppers are the details: the famous 12th–13th century bronze doors with their lively reliefs, the peaceful cloister, and the stunning altarpiece by Mantegna in the chapel (when it’s on display — otherwise reproductions help tell the story). You’ll also find lovely fresco fragments, elegant capitals carved with playful scenes, and a sense of layered history — Romanesque bones with touches and treasures added across centuries. It’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down, look closely, and imagine the many generations who’ve passed through its doors.

Verona

Verona feels like a storybook town where Roman stones and medieval towers sit comfortably beside lively cafés and modern boutiques. Start at the Arena, a remarkably well-preserved Roman amphitheater that still hosts operas and concerts in summer—there’s something magical about hearing music under the open sky with the old stone glowing at sunset. Wander out…

Thanks for visiting! I hope you have a great trip.
