Once inside, you’ll find yourself in a serene and awe-inspiring space. The interior is a testament to the craftsmanship and artistry of the era. The high ceilings are adorned with stunning frescoes and intricate wooden carvings, creating a sense of grandeur and reverence. The nave is filled with natural light that pours in through beautiful stained glass windows, casting a colorful glow on the richly decorated altars and religious artworks.
One of the most remarkable features of the Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo is its ornate Rococo-style gilt woodwork. The highly detailed and gilded wood carvings adorn the altarpieces and chapels, adding a touch of opulence and splendor to the entire church. We went in and they didn’t allow photos. We were inside all of two minutes and I honestly don’t even remember what it looks like inside. You’ll probably walk by here to get from the old town to the castle complex, but you can skip this one.
