Originally constructed in the late 16th century and later modified in the 18th century, the church showcases a beautiful blend of architectural styles, with its ornate façade and decorative elements reflecting the grandeur of the Baroque period. The interior is equally captivating, with gilded woodwork, intricate altars, and religious artwork that demonstrate the skill and devotion of the artisans who worked on the church.

It sits at the top of a lovely manicured garden lined with colorful flowerbeds and symmetrical pathways that lead up to the church’s entrance. This is a cute little church that warrants a visit. The view through the gardens toward the church are spectacular. You can climb the church tower and get a bird’s eye view over the gardens as well. To do this, there is a kiosk inside the church where you can purchase a ticket. The machine would not work for me, but a helpful employee made sure that I got through the turnstile and up to the views. It was kind of funny to see a Microsoft Windows error in Portuguese and know exactly what it said.

If you’re in Guimarães you can’t miss the palace. You can buy tickets online in advance or you can just wait in the short line when you get there. There’s a combo ticket that gets you into the palace, the castle, and the Museu de Alberto Sampaio, which is what we did.

Santuário da Penha
The Santuário da Penha, perched high on Monte da Penha overlooking Guimarães, is a striking pilgrimage site that combines spiritual significance, modernist architecture, and breathtaking natural beauty. Designed by architect José Marques da Silva and completed in the 1940s, the sanctuary stands out with its bold granite construction and Art Deco influences, quite different from the Baroque churches commonly found in Portugal.
Visiting Penha is about more than just the sanctuary itself—it’s an experience. The panoramic views from the mountaintop are some of the best in northern Portugal, offering sweeping vistas over Guimarães and the surrounding countryside. The area around the sanctuary is a peaceful parkland of giant boulders, forest paths, and picnic areas, perfect for a relaxing stroll or quiet reflection. You’ll even find small chapels and sculptures scattered throughout the grounds.
You can reach the sanctuary by car, hiking trails, or by taking the Penha cable car, a scenic and fun way to ascend the hill. Whether you’re drawn by religious devotion, architectural curiosity, or a love of nature and views, the Santuário da Penha offers a unique and rewarding visit that blends the sacred with the serene.

The ride up to the sanctuary in the cable car was beautiful, if a little warm. It’s like a greenhouse in there with no moving air. I can imagine that on a hot day it would be stifling. When you get off the cable car you have to walk on a path through the woods to get to the sanctuary, so something to keep in mind if you have mobility issues.
The church itself is not that exciting. It’s pretty austere inside, though the stained glass is pretty. The trip up here is really more about the view and the surroundings. Take the time to hike around a little and enjoy the moss-covered rock formations.

Igreja de São Miguel do Castelo
As you approach the church, you will immediately notice its striking medieval architecture, which is a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The surrounding castle walls add to the atmosphere, creating a truly awe-inspiring sight.
The church is small, but imposing. The thick local granite used to build the structure gives it an air of permanence and solidity and has allowed it to stand the test of time. There is little decoration inside, save a crucifix. The windows are simple narrow gaps in the stone.
There is a beauty in the simplicity of this church. Take a few quiet moments while you are inside to feel the history of this place. The church dates from 1216 and was consecrated in 1239 and it is believed that Afonso Henriques, the first Portuguese King, was baptized here.

As you approach the castle, you’ll notice its imposing stone walls and defensive towers.
