Situated along the picturesque Douro River, Praça da Ribeira offers an enchanting blend of history, culture, and local charm. The square is surrounded by colorful buildings that showcase the traditional Portuguese architectural style with their tiled facades and wrought-iron balconies. The narrow, cobbled streets add to the old-world ambiance, evoking a sense of stepping back in time.
One of the main highlights of the Praça da Ribeira is its lively atmosphere. The square is bustling with activity throughout the day, with locals and tourists alike strolling around, enjoying the vibrant energy. You can soak up the lively ambiance while sitting at one of the numerous outdoor cafés, sipping a cup of coffee or a glass of port wine, and simply watching the world go by.
The riverside location of Praça da Ribeira offers breathtaking views of the Douro River. From the square, you can admire the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge, a double-deck iron bridge that connects Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia. The bridge is a significant landmark and provides an excellent vantage point for panoramic views of the city and the river.
Exploring the Praça da Ribeira also means immersing yourself in Porto’s rich history. The square is home to several historic buildings, including the 14th century Church of São Francisco with its intricate Gothic design and the Casa do Infante, a former medieval royal residence that now serves as a museum. There are also various charming souvenir shops, art galleries, and local handicraft stalls where you can find unique mementos to take back home.

Since I’m allergic to crowds, I visited in the morning and enjoyed the solitude. I communed with a cute kitty and took my fill of pictures. If you’re the type of person who wants to sit at a cafe and people watch, then come at lunch or dinner to enjoy the bustle of a busy European square.

Ponte de Dom Luís I
Designed by the renowned German engineer Théophile Seyrig, who was a student of Gustave Eiffel, the bridge was completed in 1886. Its construction is a testament to the industrial revolution era and showcases the innovative use of iron and steel in bridge engineering.
The Ponte de Dom Luís I is a double-deck, metal arch bridge that spans the Douro River with grandeur and elegance. It measures approximately 385 meters (1,263 feet) in length, and its most distinctive feature is its two levels. The top level serves as a roadway for vehicles and pedestrians, while the lower level is reserved for the Porto Metro, providing a convenient means of transportation across the river.
As you approach the bridge, you’ll be captivated by its intricate lattice ironwork, which gives it a unique and intricate appearance. From a distance, the Ponte de Dom Luís I stands tall and majestic, offering a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape and the river below.
Walking across the top level of the bridge is a must-do experience for any visitor to Porto. As you stroll along, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the historic Ribeira district, with its colorful buildings cascading down the hillside and the boats gracefully gliding along the Douro River. It’s a scene that truly embodies the charm and beauty of Porto.
Once you reach the other side of the bridge, you’ll find yourself in Vila Nova de Gaia, a neighborhood famous for its wine cellars and the production of Port wine. Take the opportunity to explore the area, visit some of the renowned wineries, and indulge in a tasting of Portugal’s famous fortified wine.

This bridge is beautiful and impressive from every angle. I’ll be honest though, I’ve always been a little scared of bridges. For some reason that fear is only growing. I decided to walk across the top level of the bridge and it took every ounce of willpower to not sprint across as quickly as possible, screaming and pushing people out of my way. I felt like I might vomit. For those people who, like me, don’t like heights, be aware that you can see through the floor of the bridge where the tram tracks are. It’s a little unnerving.
Once I got to the other side I was debating how to get back because there was no way I was going to walk over it again. Ultimately, I walked across from the bottom level and that was much better.

Igreja de Santa Clara
The Igreja de Santa Clara is a magnificent church dedicated to Saint Clare of Assisi, an Italian saint and one of the first followers of Saint Francis of Assisi. Built in the 15th century, the Igreja de Santa Clara is an excellent example of Gothic architecture, with its grand façade and intricate details.
You approach the church through a doorway into a courtyard. You’ll notice its imposing stone exterior. An ornate, Baroque portal was later added around the door. The combination of Gothic elements and Baroque influences creates a visually stunning sight.
Upon entering, you’ll be greeted by an opulent and awe-inspiring interior. The high vaulted ceilings are covered in frescoes and gilt in gold. Nearly every surface of the walls are bedecked with elaborately carved, gilded woodwork. If you like gold cherubs, this is the church for you. The entire church is bathed in light from the large clerestory windows.
One of the notable features of the Igreja de Santa Clara is its impressive altarpiece. The intricate gilded woodwork and delicate sculptures create a focal point that is both artistically and spiritually significant. It is a masterpiece of Baroque artistry, showcasing the craftsmanship of the period.

This is my favorite place in Porto. You could probably visit every day for a year and each time you would find something new to admire. While I was taking about 5,000 pictures, an employee came over and talked to me about the history of the church and its restoration. He told me about something I had never considered before when it comes to church restoration… termites. I guess they had done serious damage to some of the carvings and the only thing holding them together was the gold in which they were covered.
I loved this place, and I would live here if I could. You must go and see it for yourself.

As you approach the cathedral, you’ll immediately notice its commanding presence and stunning architectural style. Originally built in the 12th century, Sé do Porto (Porto Cathedral) is a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture, adorned with Gothic and Baroque elements added over the centuries. The exterior features intricately carved facades, imposing towers, and a grand rose window that catches the eye.
The interior of the cathedral is equally breathtaking, with high vaulted ceilings, ornate chapels, and beautiful stained glass windows that allow colorful light to filter through. Take a moment to admire the intricate details of the altarpieces, sculptures, and religious artifacts that showcase the craftsmanship of the time.
One of the notable highlights of Sé do Porto is the Silver Altar, an exquisite masterpiece made of silver and gold that dates back to the 17th century. It is a true testament to the city’s historical and cultural heritage. Another remarkable feature is the Cloister, a peaceful courtyard adorned with azulejo tiles, which provides a tranquil escape from the bustling streets outside.
After exploring the interior, make sure to ascend to the terrace of the cathedral. From here, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Porto’s old town, the Douro River, and the charming red rooftops that characterize the cityscape. It’s a perfect spot to capture memorable photos or simply soak in the enchanting atmosphere.
Keep in mind that as a popular tourist destination, Sé do Porto can get crowded, especially during peak times. It is advisable to arrive early to fully appreciate the tranquility of the place and avoid the crowds. Also, remember to dress respectfully as it is a religious site.

There was more to see at the cathedral than I thought. Between the cathedral itself, the cloister, the tower rooms, and the other chapels, it took some time to get through it all. I got a combo ticket for the Cathedral and the Episcopal Palace next door and thought it was worth it. I would rate the Cathedral a must-see and the Episcopal Palace as something you should only see if you have enough time.

You can spend hours exploring the various stores and uncovering hidden gems. It’s a great place to find one-of-a-kind gifts or mementos to take back home.
In addition to shopping, Rua das Flores is a food lover’s paradise. Along the street, you’ll find numerous cafes, restaurants, and pastry shops serving up mouthwatering treats and traditional Portuguese cuisine. Whether you’re in the mood for a leisurely coffee break, a quick bite, or a full meal, there are plenty of options to satisfy your cravings. Don’t forget to try some of Porto’s famous pastries like the pastel de nata or the bolo de arroz.
While exploring Rua das Flores, keep an eye out for cultural landmarks. The street is home to several historical sites, including the Igreja da Misericórdia and the Museu da Misericórdia are also worth a visit and offer a glimpse into Porto’s rich cultural heritage.
One of the best things about Rua das Flores is its accessibility. It’s located in the heart of Porto’s historic center, making it easy to reach on foot from other popular attractions like the Ribeira district and the Dom Luís I Bridge. The street is often bustling with locals and tourists, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere.

You can’t go wrong walking along the Rua das Flores. There are cute shops and lots of places to get sweet treats. I also found enough street art to keep me busy with my camera for a while. Grab a seat at a cafe and listen to the street musicians or just people watch.
