As you step into the Sereia Garden, you’ll be immediately greeted by the soothing sounds of flowing water and the refreshing scent of blooming flowers. The garden’s centerpiece is a beautiful fountain featuring a “mermaid” sculpture (really, it’s a statue of Triton), which gives the garden its name.
The garden is adorned with vibrant and well-tended flower beds, showcasing a diverse range of flora. Lush green lawns provide ample space for picnics or simply sitting back and enjoying the surrounding natural beauty. Benches and shaded areas are strategically placed throughout the garden, inviting visitors to relax, read a book, or simply soak in the peaceful atmosphere.
One of the highlights of Sereia Garden is its carefully designed pathways that wind through the greenery, leading you to different areas of the garden. As you explore, you’ll come across charming gazebos, decorative archways, and ornamental statues, each adding to the garden’s charm and creating a sense of discovery.

The university is situated atop a hill, providing breathtaking views of the city and the Mondego River. Its historic campus, known as the Alta or Upper Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-visit destination for those interested in both academia and history. Walking through the narrow streets and ancient courtyards, you’ll be transported back in time, surrounded by centuries-old buildings adorned with intricate details and symbols.
The highlight of a visit to Coimbra University is undoubtedly the Joanina Library, considered one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. Built in the 18th century, it houses an extensive collection of rare books and manuscripts. The library’s stunning Baroque architecture, ornate ceilings, and intricate woodwork make it a true gem for bibliophiles and architecture enthusiasts alike.
Another significant landmark within the university is the University Tower, also known as the Clock Tower. It serves as an iconic symbol of Coimbra and offers a fantastic panoramic view of the city. Climbing to the top of the tower allows visitors to appreciate the city’s unique blend of historical charm and modern vibrancy.
Coimbra University is not only a place of architectural grandeur but also a hub of knowledge and academic pursuit. The university has a rich tradition of fostering some of Portugal’s brightest minds, including famous poets, philosophers, and statesmen. If you have an opportunity to visit Coimbra University, make sure to attend a traditional academic ceremony known as the “Queima das Fitas” (Burning of the Ribbons), typically held in May. It’s a wonderful way to experience the vibrant student life and immerse yourself in the university’s traditions.

Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Nova
Situated on the left bank of the Mondego River, the Santa Clara-a-Nova Monastery dates back to the 17th century and was established as a convent for the Poor Clares, a Catholic religious order of nuns. The monastery’s architecture is a delightful blend of Manueline and Baroque styles, offering a visual treat for visitors.
As you approach the monastery, you will be greeted by an impressive façade adorned with intricate carvings and decorative elements. Step inside, and you’ll be transported to a serene and tranquil atmosphere. The interior boasts a magnificent central nave, adorned with beautiful gilded altars, and exquisite sculptures, reflecting the grandeur of the period.
One of the most notable features of Santa Clara-a-Nova is the tomb of Queen Isabel of Portugal, also known as Saint Elizabeth of Portugal. This revered queen, who lived in the 13th century, is remembered for her devotion to the poor and her acts of charity. Her tomb, an elaborate marble structure, is a sight to behold and attracts many pilgrims and visitors.
Near the monastery is the charming Santa Clara-a-Velha Monastery, which was the original convent before being abandoned due to flooding. Visitors have the opportunity to explore the archaeological site of Santa Clara-a-Velha, offering insights into the history and hardships faced by the nuns living there centuries ago.
Beyond its historical and architectural significance, the Santa Clara-a-Nova Monastery is also surrounded by beautiful gardens and offers stunning views of the Mondego River. Take a leisurely stroll through the manicured lawns and vibrant flowerbeds, and enjoy the peaceful ambiance that envelops the monastery grounds.
Visit Notes
This was possibly my favorite stop in Coimbra. There are a couple of options for visiting this monastery, you can explore the church on your own or you can choose from two different guided tours. I opted for the full tour so I could see the tomb of Queen Isabel. I had my own private tour and found it informative and entertaining. The tomb was incredible, but you’re not allowed to take pictures in that area.
The terrace in front of the monastery has beautiful views over Coimbra and the river.

As you approach the monastery, you will be struck by its stunning location near the Mondego River. The serene surroundings and picturesque views create a tranquil atmosphere that transports you back in time. However, it’s important to note that the monastery suffered considerable damage from floods over the centuries, but it has been carefully restored to preserve its original charm.
Upon entering the Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha, you will be greeted by the grandeur of its Gothic architecture. The massive stone walls, intricate arches, and majestic windows are a testament to the craftsmanship of the past. As you explore the interior, you’ll discover a wealth of historical artifacts and exhibits that offer insights into the monastery’s rich history.
One of the main highlights of the monastery is the nun’s choir. Here, you can witness a remarkable example of medieval religious art. The choir stalls are beautifully carved and decorated, showcasing the talent and dedication of the artisans who created them. This area provides a glimpse into the daily lives and devotion of the nuns who once inhabited the monastery.
Another notable feature is the archaeological site beneath the monastery. Through a fascinating underground tour, you can explore the remains of the original monastery that was partially buried by the river’s flooding. This immersive experience offers a unique perspective on the challenges faced by the monastery throughout its history.
Moreover, the Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha is not just a historical site; it also hosts various cultural events, concerts, and exhibitions, adding a vibrant and contemporary touch to its ancient walls. If you happen to visit during one of these events, you’ll have the opportunity to witness the fusion of history and modernity.

Joanina Library
The Joanina Library in Coimbra is a magnificent Baroque library located within the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest universities in Europe, founded in 1290. Built between 1717 and 1728 during the reign of King João V, it’s considered one of the most beautiful and lavish libraries in the world.
The library’s interior is a feast for the eyes, featuring three grand rooms adorned with exquisite gilded woodwork, intricate frescoed ceilings, and elaborate decorative motifs. Its polished exotic wood shelves are filled with over 60,000 leather-bound volumes, primarily from the 16th to 18th centuries, covering topics like medicine, law, theology, and philosophy.
An interesting and quirky feature of the library is its resident colony of bats, which help preserve the valuable books by eating insects that could damage them. Because of this, silk covers are draped over the tables at night to protect them from bat droppings.
Visiting the Joanina Library is like stepping back in time to an era of scholarly grandeur. It’s located near the Royal Palace and the University’s Tower, making it a perfect stop on a tour of Coimbra’s historic hilltop campus. The library is usually included in the University’s general ticket, which provides access to several notable sites. It’s a must-see for anyone fascinated by history, architecture, or simply seeking an unforgettable, almost magical experience.

The library can be visited with a timed ticket. It’s a very impressive space that is worth the visit, even if you can’t take pictures. You are given a specific amount of time in each space and there are information sheets in multiple languages which you can read for more information.
Don’t let the pictures below fool you, those are just the initial library floor, the only place you’re allowed to take photos. The Noble Floor of the library is gorgeous. See the official website for pictures of that area.
