If you have kids, or are a kid at heart, this museum is for you. It is very informative about earthquakes in general as well as the 1755 Lisbon earthquake specifically. You go in as a group and are led through a number of rooms, each with its own theme. There are interactive exhibits in every room. The highlight of the experience is the “ride” which allows you to experience the 1755 earthquake. When the quake struck, many people were in church, so the ride puts you in a church in a series of pews. If you have any kind of back problems, I will recommend asking for one of the seats that doesn’t move. It is literally a wooden pew that jerks you around pretty well and I could see this causing trouble for people with pre-existing conditions.
Overall, I had a great time at the museum and I would recommend it for some perspective on the earthquake that shaped Lisbon into what it is today.

Somewhat confusingly, there are two National Coach Museums. A ticket to one will not get you into both, but if you ask nicely, you may get a discount at the second one.
The two buildings could not be more different from one another. One is modern and white, allowing the focus to be on the elaborate coaches. The other, is in the old riding school building and has elaborate decorations on the walls and ceilings. I was more taken by the details of the architecture than the coaches. I found that both were worth visiting, but if I could only choose one, I would choose the more modern one. I found the coaches there to be more impressive, and if you’re visiting the coach museum, that’s probably what you want to see.

I thoroughly enjoyed this museum. When you arrive, you get an audio guide that walks you through a series of “stories” about life in Lisbon through history. The stories are engrossing and I learned a lot. I liked how immersive some of the rooms were, for instance, there was a storage area where you learn about the kinds of trade Lisbon was famous for and you could smell the spices. If you’re interested in the history of Lisbon at all, this is a fantastic place to start.
