Castelo de São Jorge
Perched on a hilltop in the historic Alfama district, the Castelo de São Jorge (St George Castle, Castle of Saint George) has been a prominent feature of the city’s skyline for centuries. Its origins can be traced back to the 6th century when it was built as a Moorish fortress. Over the years, it underwent several transformations and expansions under different rulers, including the Christians who took over the castle in the 12th century.
As you approach the castle, you’ll notice its imposing medieval walls and towers, which give it a sense of grandeur and strength. Once inside, you’ll be greeted by a vast courtyard adorned with beautiful gardens, ancient stone arches, and remnants of archaeological excavations that uncover the castle’s past.
Exploring the castle grounds is like stepping into a time machine. You can wander through the various areas, such as the Tower of Ulysses, which offers stunning views of the city and the Tagus River. The Tower of the Keep allows you to delve into the castle’s military history and enjoy panoramic vistas from its rooftop terrace.
One of the highlights of visiting the Castelo de São Jorge is the chance to stroll along the fortified walls. Walking the ramparts, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods, the sparkling river, and beyond. It’s an excellent vantage point to admire the city’s unique blend of ancient and modern architecture.
The castle also houses the permanent exhibition “Lisboa Under Your Feet,” which takes you on a journey through the city’s evolution from its Roman origins to the present day. The interactive displays and artifacts provide a fascinating insight into Lisbon’s cultural and historical heritage.
Additionally, the Castelo de São Jorge hosts various cultural events and concerts throughout the year, creating a vibrant atmosphere that adds to the allure of the place.
Visit Notes
Give yourself at least a couple of hours to visit the castle. There are viewpoints to enjoy, medieval walls to walk, museum exhibits to visit, and benches on which to relax. I particularly enjoyed the archaeological exhibits showing artifacts excavated on the site. We got ourselves some food from the cafe and admired the views while refueling. Afterwards we discovered a castle cat and befriended it. There are plenty of shady places to sit and imagine life as it must have been in the castle’s heyday.
You can buy your ticket online in order to save time standing in line. If you go there without a ticket and find a long line, there is a ticket kiosk off to the side that people don’t seem to know about. Use that and get it quickly.

The Estrela Basilica is situated in the Estrela neighborhood, atop a small hill, providing visitors with stunning panoramic views of Lisbon. Its construction began in the late 18th century and was completed in the early 19th century, making it a prime example of neoclassical architecture.
As you approach the basilica, you’ll be captivated by its imposing presence. The grand façade features an impressive portico with six columns, creating a sense of grandeur and elegance. Above the entrance, you’ll notice a beautiful rose window, adorned with intricate stone carvings. The contrast of white stone against the blue sky is truly captivating.
Step inside, and you’ll find yourself in a world of artistic beauty. The interior of the Basílica da Estrela is awe-inspiring, with its soaring ceilings, richly decorated chapels, and intricate details. The main altar is a masterpiece, adorned with ornate gold leaf and surrounded by statues of saints. The side chapels, each dedicated to a different saint, are equally breathtaking, showcasing exquisite sculptures and paintings.
One of the highlights of the basilica is its stunning dome, which offers a breathtaking view from both inside and outside. The dome’s intricate frescoes depict scenes from the life of Jesus and are a true feast for the eyes.
The Basílica da Estrela is not just a place of worship but also a mausoleum for Queen Maria I of Portugal and her family. You can find their ornate tombs inside, adding to the sense of history and grandeur.
Outside the basilica, you’ll discover a beautiful garden known as the Jardim da Estrela. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy the tranquility after exploring the church. The garden is filled with lush greenery, fountains, and charming pathways, making it an idyllic spot for a leisurely stroll or a picnic.

When I arrived at the Estrela Basilica, there was a christening getting underway. I was still invited inside and sat in the back to watch the proceedings. Experiencing a historic church being used for a ceremony and filled with family and friends lends a different atmosphere than when the church is populated with tourists. I was able to sit quietly and just take in the details that cover every surface.
Eventually, the ceremony ended, the family left, and I was left alone to take photos and enjoy the quiet. The basilica is filled with interesting statues and paintings and the building itself is quite impressive.
While you’re here, take a trip across the street to enjoy the Jardim da Estrela. Both sights can be viewed in under an hour, unless, like me, you take a ton of pictures and stalk ducks. Don’t forget to go up to the basilica’s rooftop for some killer views of the city, but also the basilica’s towers and bells.

This park is a nice break from the hardscapes of the city. Whether you enjoy plants, people watching, bird watching, or just relaxing in the shade with an ice cream, Jardim da Estrela will not disappoint. It is located just across the street from the Basílica da Estrela which you will absolutely want to visit, so it’s worth also taking a walk in the park while you’re in the area.

The museum is fairly small and unless you have a deep interest in St. Anthony, it’s probably okay to skip. I was here at the busiest part of the day, when there were so many people walking by outside you could barely move, but the museum was completely empty. It was kind of nice to get away from the crowds for a bit and be able to enjoy a place in peace.
The church is free to enter if you happen to be walking by and want to take a quick tour through.

We were able to walk into the convent and get a tour on-demand with an English-speaking guide. The tour was interesting and educational and the convent itself is gorgeous. It’s filled with azulejo tiles, inlaid marble, gold touches, and religious artifacts. There was no one else around and this tour was a great way to escape the crowds in the rest of the city. I highly recommend visiting.
