The Basilica di Santa Maria sopra Minerva is a Dominican church that feels like a bit of a surprise: the exterior is fairly understated, but once you step inside, the Gothic character really comes through—ribbed vaulting, a soaring interior, and an overall sense of bright, devotional space. It’s set in one of Rome’s busiest historic areas near the Pantheon, so it can feel like a calm pause amid all the noise of the city.
Inside, you’ll find some major treasures. One of the highlights is Michelangelo’s marble sculpture Christ the Redeemer (Cristo della Minerva), made in 1521 and placed near the main altar. The Carafa Chapel is another must-see—an ornate chapel dedicated to St. Thomas Aquinas, decorated with frescoes that celebrate Aquinas and his teachings, with key work by Filippino Lippi. The basilica is also closely connected with Dominican saints, including veneration connected to Saint Catherine of Siena and Fra Angelico.
