Sant’Andrea della Valle is one of those Rome churches that feels extra “alive” the moment you step inside. It’s a Baroque basilica that rises with confidence—especially thanks to its huge dome, which dominates the space and pulls your eyes upward right away. Even if you’re just passing through the area, it’s worth detouring for the sheer theatrical sense of scale and atmosphere; it’s built for awe.
Inside, the star is the dome fresco—an enormous Baroque-style burst of energy showing the Assumption of the Virgin, painted by Giovanni Lanfranco (with work also associated with Domenichino in parts of the larger fresco program). As you look around, you’ll also notice the church’s chapels and sculptural focus, with standout reliefs such as Antonio Raggi’s white-marble work in the Ginetti Chapel. If you like Baroque art that feels like it’s moving, Sant’Andrea della Valle is one of the best stops in the city.
