Santa Maria in Portico in Campitelli is a Baroque church on the small Piazza di Campitelli, built in the 17th century as a shrine for a tiny, much‑venerated icon of the Virgin that was believed to have stopped a 1656 plague. From the square the church looks grand but nicely scaled to the street, with a two‑level travertine façade, a dome, and a lantern; its plan cleverly leads the eye from the wide nave into the domed shrine that holds the miracle image. The building grew from older Christian and Roman remains on the site, so it feels like one of those Roman places where many layers of the city sit together.
Inside, the real draw is the glittering little icon of the Madonna del Portico set in a gilded “gloria” of angels and rays above the high altar, housed in a sculptural setting designed by Rainaldi and finished by artists like Giovanni Antonio de’ Rossi and Ercole Ferrata. The side chapels contain notable Baroque paintings by artists such as Luca Giordano, Giovanni Battista Gaulli (Baciccia), and Sebastiano Conca, plus impressive funerary monuments (like the Altieri chapels) and a small reliquary chapel with older relics and a Byzantine‑style mosaic.

Santa Maria in Trivio is a small Baroque church near the Trevi area that dates back to an early foundation and was rebuilt in the late 16th century by Jacopo del Duca; it sits quietly on a little piazza. The interior is a single nave with shallow side chapels and a barrel-vaulted ceiling that gives the space a warm, intimate feeling.
The church’s standout artwork is the rich ceiling frescoes by Antonio Gherardi (1670), which show scenes from the life of the Virgin and create a bright, dramatic overhead visual. Other notable pieces include a 14th-century Venetian wooden crucifix in the Chapel of the Crucifix, an early panel of the Virgin and Child at the high altar, and side-altarpieces by artists associated with Palma il Giovane’s studio, Luigi Scaramuccia, and Pietro Perugino’s circle—plus painted archivolts and a polychrome pietra dura altar that add to the charm.

San Girolamo della Carità sits near Palazzo Farnese and Campo de’ Fiori; it grew from a 4th‑century tradition linking the site to Saint Jerome and was rebuilt in the 17th century in a Baroque style with a carved wooden ceiling and an orderly, single‑nave interior. The church has long ties to St. Philip Neri, who lived in the adjoining hospice and used the place for early Oratorian gatherings, giving the site an important role in Rome’s religious life.
Inside you’ll find several striking artworks: the high altar holds a copy of Domenichino’s Last Communion of St. Jerome (the original is in the Vatican Pinacoteca), the richly decorated Spada Chapel—often linked to Borromini’s design—shines with jasper and polychrome marbles, and the Antamoro Chapel is a rare Roman work by Filippo Juvarra containing a backlit marble statue of St. Philip Neri by Pierre Le Gros. The wooden ceiling is carved with images including the Instruments of the Passion, and various chapels hold notable altarpieces and funerary monuments that reflect the church’s long artistic layering.

San Salvatore in Onda is a neighborhood church on Via dei Pettinari that dates back to the Middle Ages but was rebuilt in the 19th century and given to the Pallottine order. From the street it looks modest, but inside it opens into a bright, three‑nave space with twelve old columns and a calm, welcoming feel—more like a parish church than a big tourist stop. Beneath the altar there’s also an ancient crypt with Roman columns, a reminder of the church’s long history and the layers under Rome’s streets.
Notable artworks include the large apse painting of the Madonna and Child by Cesare Mariani (1878) and the side chapel image known as the Virgo Potens, donated by Elisabetta Sanna, whose memorial is in the church. The high altar also encloses the sarcophagus that holds the body of St. Vincent Pallotti, founder of the Pallottines, making the church important for pilgrims and locals alike.
