Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari

    Lisbon Military Museum

The Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari—often just called the Frari—is one of Venice’s most impressive and historically rich churches, tucked into the lively Campo dei Frari in the San Polo district. It’s a grand example of Venetian Gothic architecture, built largely in the 14th and 15th centuries with soaring brick walls and a tall bell tower that’s among the highest in the city. The interior is striking: a Latin-cross layout with three naves, ribbed vaults, and enormous columns creates a sense of both spiritual openness and architectural drama. The basilica also retains the only original rood screen (or medieval choir screen) still in place in Venice—an evocative reminder of its long history.

What makes the Frari especially rewarding for visitors is its artistic treasures and tombs of Venetian greats. Above the high altar hangs Titian’s monumental Assumption of the Virgin, one of the most celebrated Renaissance paintings in the world and a must-see centerpiece. The church also houses Titian’s Pesaro Madonna and a serene sacristy altarpiece by Giovanni Bellini, plus works by other masters like Bartolomeo Vivarini and a rare wooden statue of Saint John the Baptist by Donatello. Many notable figures are buried here too—including Titian himself, the composer Claudio Monteverdi, and various doges—so walking through the Frari feels like a journey through Venice’s artistic and civic history.

    Santa Maria dei Carmini

    Lisbon Military Museum

Santa Maria dei Carmini is a historic church tucked into the lively Dorsoduro district of Venice, just off Campo Santa Margherita and well worth a quiet visit between the city’s busier landmarks. Originally built in the 14th century for the Carmelite order and dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the church blends Gothic origins with later Renaissance and Baroque enhancements, offering a façade and interior that reflect centuries of Venetian architectural evolution. Inside, you’ll find a traditional Latin-cross plan with a single nave and side chapels, creating a spacious yet intimate atmosphere that invites reflection.

Art lovers will appreciate the rich collection of Renaissance and Baroque works here, including a celebrated Adoration of the Shepherds by Cima da Conegliano and other paintings by Lorenzo Lotto, Palma il Giovane, and Niccolò Bambini, as well as a notable early altarpiece by Tintoretto illustrating the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. The church’s ornate ceiling frescoes and sculptural details speak to the Carmelite devotion to the Virgin Mary. Visiting Santa Maria dei Carmini also places you right next to the beautiful Scuola Grande dei Carmini, whose Tiepolo-painted halls are another highlight nearby, all within a vibrant neighborhood filled with cafés and local life.

Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute

    Lisbon Military Museum

The Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute is one of Venice’s most striking landmarks, rising gracefully at the entrance to the Grand Canal where it meets the Bacino di San Marco. Built in the 17th century as a votive church after the city survived a devastating plague, its luminous white stone exterior and massive octagonal dome immediately command attention, especially when viewed from across the water. Designed by Baldassare Longhena, the basilica is a masterpiece of Venetian Baroque architecture, with dramatic curves, monumental staircases, and an airy sense of openness that feels both grand and serene.

Inside, the church is spacious and light-filled, with a soaring central dome that draws your eyes upward and a sense of calm that contrasts with the bustle of nearby San Marco. The basilica houses important artworks, including several paintings by Titian, such as The Presentation of the Virgin, displayed in the sacristy. Santa Maria della Salute is still an active place of worship and plays a central role in Venetian life during the annual Festa della Salute in November, when locals cross a temporary bridge to give thanks. Visiting offers not only beautiful art and architecture, but also a deeper connection to Venice’s history, resilience, and enduring traditions.
