Santa Maria in Domnica, often called Santa Maria alla Navicella because of the small fountain shaped like a ship in front, is an old church near the Villa Celimontana that dates back to the early Christian period. From the outside it looks modest and tucked into a quiet street, but it has been repaired and changed over many centuries, so you notice different styles mixed together—ancient stone, medieval touches, and later decorations.
Inside, the church feels warm and simple, with a single nave, columns that came from older buildings, and frescoes and mosaics that show saints and scenes from the Bible. There’s a peaceful, lived-in feel; locals go there for services while visitors come to see the old artworks and the little ship fountain outside that gives the church its nickname.
