Chiesa di San Marcello al Corso

The Chiesa di San Marcello al Corso is a Baroque church on Piazza San Marcello in central Rome, standing on a narrow site between busy streets. From the outside you’ll notice a tall, elegant façade with pilasters and a curved pediment that gives it a graceful, but restrained Baroque look; the church has a compact, vertical feel because the plot is slim, and it sits amid the everyday bustle of shops and cafes. Inside, the space feels bright and orderly—with light walls, gilded details, and side chapels surrounding a compact nave.

Notable artworks include altarpieces and frescoes by prominent Roman artists: the high altar ensemble and some chapels contain paintings attributed to Pietro da Cortona and Giovanni Battista Gaulli (Baciccio), known for dynamic Baroque figures and dramatic light. You’ll also find sculptural works and richly decorated chapels with ornate marble and stucco, plus smaller devotional paintings and reliquaries that reflect the church’s long history and local importance.
