Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pace

Santa Maria della Pace is a small, tucked-away Renaissance church — intimate, calm, and full of layered Roman charm. The façade is modest but elegant, and inside you step into a compact oval chapel with a lovely harmony of light, frescoed vaults, and richly detailed Baroque chapels that feel both cozy and grand. The space is compact enough that every artwork and architectural detail reads clearly: frescoed ceilings, curved pilasters, and decorative stucco that guide your eye around the room.

The church houses a few notable works: most famously there’s a beautiful Raphael-associated altarpiece (the “Sibyls”/Madonna-related pieces historically linked to his workshop) and impressive fresco cycles by artists working in the High Renaissance and Baroque traditions — these include richly colored scenes and saintly portraits in side chapels. You’ll also find finely carved marble altars and decorative chapels that show off local sculptors’ and painters’ skill, so even if you only spend a short time here, the mix of Raphael-related painting, fresco work, and elegant sculptural details makes it worth popping in.
