San Luigi dei Francesi is the small, atmospheric national church of France in Rome — compact but packed with art and atmosphere. The exterior is restrained, but step inside and you experience a vivid, Baroque interior with warm marble, deep-colored pilasters, and a sense of theatricality that draws your eye toward the chapels. The church’s scale makes everything feel up close and personal: you can stand near an altar and really study the brushstrokes and faces in the paintings.
Its biggest draw is the trio of Caravaggio paintings in the Contarelli Chapel — “The Calling of Saint Matthew,” “The Inspiration of Saint Matthew,” and “The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew” — which are dramatic and powerful up close. Aside from Caravaggio, the church also contains elegant altarpieces and frescoes by Domenichino and other 17th-century artists, fine marble work, and richly decorated chapels dedicated to French saints; together these make it a concentrated showcase of Roman Baroque art with a distinctly French patronage.
